The Pygmalion Effect
  • In 1968, a study was done by two researchers,
Rosenthal and Jacobson. They told teachers they
were testing the intelligence of children aged
six to twelve years, all drawn from the same
school. They then randomly assigned children to
two groups. Their teachers were told that the
children in one group were "high achievers" even
though they were randomly chosen. At the end of
the school year, these children showed
significant test gains, despite the random
allocation to a group. In short, the researchers
    discovered that the teachers' expectations
manifested in the children. That people pick up
unconscious clues from others and respond to
them. The subconscious mind stores our picture
of ourselves. When we are young, that picture is
influenced and reinforced by how people picture
    us.

Psyche
  • . . . Psyche is the Greek word for soul. It's
also the Greek word for butterfly. If you have a
protagonist in a story whose name is Psyche, you
might expect that she will go through a major
transition and crisis. Will she survive it? Will
she come through and be transformed, or will she
die? That's one way of looking at the Psyche
    myth.
  • Psyche refers to soul, self, and mind in
Greek, hence its similar meaning in English thus
we also have psychology, psychic, etc.

  • Make her his eternal bride
  • And from her fair unspotted side
  • Two blissful twins are to be born,
  • Youth and Joy so Jove hath sworn."
