1st Characteristic of Living ThingsCells

• The first characteristic of living things is that
  they are all composed of cells.
• Cells are the itsy bitsy puzzle pieces that make
  up all living things.

2nd Characteristic of Living ThingsGrowth and
development

• The second characteristic of living things is
  that all living things grow and develop
• Able to increase in size to get bigger
• and change over time
• Example bigger muscles

3rd Characteristic of Living ThingsReproduction

• The sixth characteristic of living things is
  reproduction. All living things need to reproduce
  to survive.
• Example Extinct/
• Endangered animals

4th Characteristic of Living ThingsEnergy

• The third characteristic of living things is all
  living things use energy.

Animals and humans eat food to obtain their
energy.
Plants however use the sunlight to obtain their
energy.

5th Characteristic of Living ThingsResponse

• The fourth characteristic of living things is
  responding to an environment
• Stimulus responding to the environment (like the
  way you act) (happens on the outside)
• Example What happens when someone jumps out and
  scares you?
• Homeostasis - maintaining the inside of their
  bodies. Not too hot and not too cold (happens on
  the inside)

• The sixth characteristic of living things is DNA
• DNA Deoxyribonucleic acid
• DNA controls the functions in a cell
• DNA is passed into reproduction called Heredity
• Able to adapt to changes through generations

• Go home and find 5 pictures of living things and
  5 pictures of non-living things.
• Either out of a magazine, real photos or you can
  even draw them.
• Bring them to class and be prepared to share with
  the class whether they are living things or
  non-living things and why.
