agitation is the way to liberty
  • Attended Fisk University, Harvard and the
    University of Berlin.
  • He was the first African American to earn a PhD
    from Harvard.
  • Founded the Niagra Movement which argued for free
    speech and the ability to criticize the
    government and society accompanied by a refusal
    to apologize for questions.
  • DuBois argued that African Americans work for
    social equality (voting restrictions lift,
    admittance in to colleges) immediately.
  • Helped begin the NAACP
  • Wanted African Americans to seek higher
    education, especially in the liberal arts
    (history, languages, philosophy) and that they
    should not settle for work.

  • Born in to slavery
  • Leader of the Tuskegee Institute, a teacher
    training college
  • Believed that African Americans should focus on
    economic equality and attempt to fit in to white
    American culture. He said that African Americans
    should accept that progress for civil rights
    would be slow but that by becoming economically
    successful, they would eventually be given
    rights.
  • This movement was called the Tuskegee Machine.
