BASICS
  • Atomic Number 16
  • Atomic Mass 32.06 amu

Sulfurs Atomic Structure
Sulfur in its natural state
3
PROPERTIES
  • Primary State Solid
  • Melting point 239.38o F
  • Boiling Point 832.28o F
  • (Very high compared to waters melting point of
    32o F and boiling point of 212o F)
  • Reactivity Reactive in all forms, even with
    water

4
COMMON USES
  • Uses for Sulfur include
  • Fertilizers
  • Lead Acid Batteries
  • Insecticide
  • Gunpowder

Sulfur Fertilizer
Sulfur Gunpowder

HISTORY
  • No one actually knows when or by who sulfur was
    discovered
  • It is mentioned in Genesis in the Bible
  • It was used by primitive man to draw on cave
    walls
  • Used by Greek poet Homer to get rid of bugs 2,800
    years ago
  • In 1777, Antione Lovoisier convinced scientific
community that Sulfur should be considered an
    element

6
COMPARE
  • The atomic number of Sulfur is low compared to
    other elements
  • Sulfurs Atomic Number 16
  • Element with Highest Atomic Number Ununquadium
    with a number of 114
  • Sulfur is a non-metal. Only 22 elements on the
    Periodic Table are non-metals
  • Next to Phosphorus (P) and Chlorine (Cl) on the
Periodic Table which are both also non-metals

7
INTERESTING FACTS
  • Onions and Garlic get their strong smell from
    Sulfur compounds
  • Sulfur is the most abundant element in the
    universe
  • Sulfur contributes to acid rain
