Depth Light
  • Sunlight, is white light.

Depth Light
  • When light hits a material like water it is
  • Reflected,
  • Absorbed,
  • or transmitted.

Depth Light
  • What happens when light passes through a blue
    material?
  • Every color but blue is absorbed

Absorbed light
transmitted light
31
Depth Light
  • So what happens to color at different depths of
    the ocean?
  • Materials
  • black felt represents the aphotic zone
  • square felt pieces in assorted colors (ROY G.BV)
  • Blue plastic goggles to represent layers of
    water

32
Depth Light
  • PROCEDURE
  • Place black felt with color pieces face-up.
  • Add one blue layer at a time in front of your
    eyes.
  • Put an X in the box for every color you can see.

Depth Light
  • Some colors travel deeper, due to shorter
    wavelength.
  • Violet gets scattered by water.

36
Depth Light
  • How does that affect the organisms that live in
    the ocean?

37
Depth Light
  • PROCEDURE
  • Have your partner randomly distribute pieces on
the reverse side of the black felt.
  • (Dont peek!)
  • Put on your goggles to simulate the Desphotic
    zone (3 layers).

38
Depth Light
  • PROCEDURE
  • Grab the first 10 pieces you can see. (no feeling
    around!)
  • Record results.
  • Repeat for your partner.
  • Total your results.

What colors give animals in the ocean the best
camouflage?
  • RED?

1) Use data from your experiments to design your
own camouflage pattern
2) Write a paragraph describing your camouflage
pattern. Use data from your experiment to explain
why you chose the colors in the pattern.
