Title: Solar Radiation, Albedo, and Light Transmission in Seawater

1
Solar Radiation, Albedo, and Light Transmission
in Seawater
  • Objectives To examine how the suns energy
    affects the ocean environment

2
The Earths revolution around the sun
3
Equinoxes and solstices
4
Exercise 1 Solar Constant
  • Set the equator to the same height as your light
    by using the meter stick
  • Measure using the Lux Meter
  • Lux meters have different settings (x1, x10,
    x100)
  • Hold it flat to the globe for all readings

5
Suns rays and surface area

Exercise 2 Latitude
  • Latitude lines are parallel to the equator.
  • Keep Lux meter flat to the globe.
  • When answering your questions, be sure to move
the globe and take new measurements.

Execise 3 - Albedo
  • The incoming radiation will be the same for every
    sample.
  • Do not move or change the set-up without asking
the TA, only change out the sample trays.
  • Ask the TA for an Ice sample to measure. Ice
doesnt have a dark sand bottom.
  • Best to answer question in the way it SHOULD be,

Exercise 4 Visible light in Water
  • Be sure that the light is in the middle depth of
    water.
  • Different ways to measure it?
  • Red should have lowest transmission
  • Best to answer question in the way it SHOULD be,
not the way your results suggest.

13
Exercise 56 Settling of particles
  • Start with 2.4 gms. powdered silica
  • Be sure to add an additional 1.2 g each time .
  • You must put your own scale into the forms.
  • Stir thoroughly when required.
