What is an adverb clause?

• An adverb clause is a dependent clause that
  modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb.
• Basically, it is a dependent clause that is
  acting as an adverb.
• An adverb is a modifier that modifies anything
  other than a noun.
• Adverbs and adverb clauses usually answer the
  questions How? Why? Under what conditions?
• Homer easily lifted the stones.

Lets identify some adverbs

• The thief fell down.
• The fire started here.
• The accident occurred suddenly.
• The train stopped abruptly.
• The detective takes notes daily.

Lets try to find some adverb clauses

• The truck moves as if it has a heavy load.
• The was was a great sea wave when the volcano
  erupted.
• We stood where we could see all of the action.
• Because the day was very hot, the cool water felt
  good.

A trick

• Most adverb clauses are introduced by
  subordinating conjunctions.
• Look for one of these words as possibly
  introducing an adverb clause
• After, Although, As, As if, As though, As long
  as, As soon as, Because, Before, If, In order
  that, Since, So that, Than, Though, Unless,
  Until, When, Whenever, Where, Wherever, While
• These words turn a clause into an adverb clause
  by making it answer the questions how? Why?
  When? Under what conditions?
