1
The North Wins
2
Main Idea
  • Thanks to victories beginning with Gettysburg and
ending with Richmond, the Union survived.

3
Why should I care?
  • Because I said so
  • If the Union had lost the United States would be
    a completely different country today.

4
The Battle of Gettysburg
  • Because McClellan hesitated to chase and destroy
the Confederate army after Antietam, Lee was able
    to win more battles.
  • At Fredericksburg Lee routed the Union who lost
    12,600 soldiers
  • Lee would have a few other big wins then he
decided to invade the North again.

5
The Battle of Gettysburg
  • Late June 1863 Rebels cross the border into PA
  • They go to G-burg to get some shoes and instead
    find the Union Army
  • Started as a skirmish but turned into a huge,
    important battle
  • Gen.Meade-90,000 men vs.. Gen. Lee-75,000

6
The Battle of Gettysburg
  • The turning point of the battle was Picketts
Charge- 13,000 Confederate men were dropped as
they charged the Union position at Cemetery Ridge

7
Cemetery Ridge
8
The Battle of Gettysburg
  • After this the Confederates were forced to
    retreat
  • Again the Union failed to chase and finish off
the Rebels and Lee was able to make it back to
    Virginia
  • But the Confederate Army was in bad shape they
    lost 28,000 men at Gettysburg
  • This battle would be the beginning of the end for
    the Confederates

9
Siege of Vicksburg
  • The day after the Battle of Gettysburg Grant won
    a big victory in Mississippi
  • Vicksburg was the last stronghold the Rebels had
on the Mississippi River and Grant finally
completed a major part of the Anaconda Plan- The
    river was under Union control
  • Now Lincoln saw Grant as the man to once and for
    all beat Lee

10
Grants Virginia Campaign
11
Grants Virginia Campaign
  • For months the Union army was fighting vicious
    battles with the South
  • In battle after battle, Grant would attack, rest,
    then attack again
  • He was losing thousands of men but all the while
    inching closer to Richmond
  • Grant told Lincoln Whatever happens we will not
    retreat

12
Grants Virginia Campaign
  • Some Union troops were so sure they would die in
battle, they pinned their names and addresses to
their jackets so their bodies could be identified
  • At Petersburg just outside of Richmond the two
sides dug trenches and faced off for 10 months!
  • Grant was relentless and Lee was forced to pull
out and on April 3, 1865 the Anaconda Plan was
finally complete- The Union Army took Richmond

13
Surrender at Appomattox
14
Surrender at Appomattox
  • On April 9 1865 Lee and Grant met in the small
town of Appomattox Court House to arrange the end
    of the Civil War.
  • The war raged for 4 long years and hundreds of
thousands of lives were lost but the United
States of America survived and would be changed
