French and Indian war

• Because England fought this war to help protect
  the colonies England went into debt (to owe
  money)

No Taxation Without Representation
The colonists were being taxed by the King and
Parliament without any say or input into The
decisions being made!

Sugar Act

• This act taxed sugar, molasses and coffee

Stamp Act

• This taxed legal documents, newspapers, printed
  materials, playing cards, and dice

Declaratory Act

• This was a statement of power. It said that
  England had the power to tax the colonies
  whenever they wanted!

Townshend Act

• This act taxed items needed for every day life in
  the colonies NOT made in the colonies.
• I.E.- lead, paint, paper, and glass

Quartering Act
This act said that the colonists had to provide
housing, candles bedding, and beverages for the
British soldiers.

Boston Massacre
Five colonists were killed here. An African
American sailor, Crispus Attucks, was one of the
five civilians killed here!

Tea Act
This act taxed tea, but more importantly,
formed a monopoly for the British East India
Company
Monopoly-
To control all the sales of a certain product

Boston Tea Party
Colonists dressed up as Mohawk Indians and threw
crates of tea into the Boston Harbor in
retaliation for the Tea Act. They were led by
Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty!

Intolerable Act
England blockaded and closed the port of
Boston until the colonists paid for the tea that
they threw into the Harbor. They did this in
retaliation for the Boston Tea Party.

The First Continental Congress

• In September 1774, 56 delegates from 12 colonies
  met in Philadelphias Pennsylvania State House
• They decided they would
• Continue to boycott
• Colonial militias needed to prepare to fight
• Created and sent the Declaration of Rights
• Agreed to meet in May 1775

Lexington
A small village outside of Boston. The first
shots of the Revolution were fired there. This
is where 8 colonists were killed on the Green.
No British soldiers were killed here.

Concord
A small village a few miles past Lexington. This
is where the first British soldier was killed at
the North Bridge. This act is known as The
Shot Heard Round the World.
