Title: Day 7 - Minerals

1
Day 7 - Minerals
2
Minerals
Explain why this is true When a metamorphic
rock is forming, it may be subjected to extremely
high temperatures, yet it never completely melts.
Because if it melts, it would become molten rock.
If it then cools and hardens, it would be an
igneous rock.
Daily Warm-Up Exercises
3
Intrusive Extrusive Rocks
  • Is there a relationship between crystal size and
whether the igneous rock was intrusive or
    extrusive?
  • Intrusive rocks like granite have larger crystals.
  • Obsidian doesnt appear to have any crystals.

4
Minerals
As magma cools, different minerals come together
toform crystals, as in this granite. The
crystals growtogether, filling the spaces.
5
Vocabulary
Mineral -
Naturally occurring, inorganic, crystalline solid
with a specific chemical composition.
Crystalline -
Atoms that are arranged in layers that repeat
over and over again.
6
Identifying Minerals
Each mineral has its own specific properties that
can be used to identify it.
1. Color
5. Density
2. Hardness
6. Breakage
3. Luster
4. Streak

8
Mineral Color
Color is the first thing people notice about
minerals, but it is NOT always a good way to
identify a mineral.
9
Mineral Color
Many minerals can be found in several different
colors.
10
Mineral Color
Only a few minerals have their own characteristic
color.
Crocoite
Azurite
11
Mineral Hardness
Mineral Hardness is measured by seeing how easy
it is to scratch a mineral.

13
Mineral Luster
Luster -
the way a mineral reflects the light.
14
Mineral Streak
Streak -
The color a mineral leaves behind when it is
rubbed across a hard, rough surface.
Even though the color of a mineral may vary, its
streak does not.
15
Mineral Density
Density is the mass of the mineral.
Every mineral has its own specific density.
What this means is that for 1 gram of a specific
mineral it will weight a different amount than 1
gram of another mineral.
16
Mineral Breakage
Minerals can break in one of two ways.
Fracture -
Breakage that is irregular and jagged.
17
Mineral Breakage
Cleavage -
Breakage that is smooth and along flat planes.
