Title: The Atomic Theorists

1
The Atomic Theorists
2
J. J. Thomson (1856-1940)
  • Thomson is credited for the discovery of the
electron, of isotopes, and the invention of the
    mass spectrometer.

3
Earnest Rutherford (1871-1937)
  • Pioneered the orbital theory of the atom through
his discovery of Rutherford scattering off the
nucleus with his gold foil experiment.

4
Robert Millikan (1868-1953)
  • American experimental physicist who won the 1923
Nobel Prize for his measurement of the charge on
the electron and for his work on the
    photoelectric effect

5
Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
  • Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics
"for his services to Theoretical Physics, and
especially for his discovery of the law of the
    photoelectric effect

6
Niels Bohr (1879-1955)
  • Danish physicist who made fundamental
    contributions to understanding atomic structure
and quantum mechanics, for which he received the
    Nobel Prize in 1922.

Project 1 (100 pts, due 7/25)
  • You and a partner will do a project based on one
of the experiments performed by the atomic
    Theorists Thomson, Rutherford, Millikan,
Einstein or Bohr. Options for your project may
include constructing a poster or a model, a
Powerpoint presentation, filming a video, or a
project of your own design (Write a poem or a
song for 25 points extra credit). A portion of
the grade for the project will be based on the
input of a panel of peers who will assess both
the project and the student's presentation of
    their project.

Project 1 (100 pts, due 7/25)
  • Your project should include the following
    elements
  • Pictures and other visuals of the experiment
  • Explanation of how the experiment or theory
    worked
  • Why its scientifically significant
  • Background of the Scientist
