• When someone does something after having done
  something else (uses après)
• Ex Après avoir mangé, il a vomi.
• After having eaten, he threw up.
• When someone wants to thank someone for having
  done something.
• Merci de mavoir invité
• When someone wants to apologize for having done
  something.
• Je mexcuse davoir oublié ton anniversaire.

Formation

• It is formed much like the passé composé, except
  that one does not conjugate the auxiliary verb
  (helping verb). The formation is as follows
• Infinitive auxiliary verb past participle
• Avoir Past Participle
• Etre Past Participle
• Reflexive Pronoun Etre Past Participle

• When using the past infinitive where the
  auxiliary verb is être, you still need to follow
  the rules of past participle agreement
• Après être allés au ciné, nous sommes allés au
  café.
• After having gone to the movies, we went to the
  café.
• Elle a déchiré son pantalon après être tombée.
• She ripped her pants after having fallen.

Notes

• Pronomial verbs, such as the reflexive and
  reciprocal verbs youve worked with, still need
  their reflexive/reciprocal pronoun
• Après vous vous être lavés, vous pouvez manger le
  petit déjeuner.
• After you've washed up, you can eat breakfast.
• Après mêtre habillée, je suis allée au centre
  commercial.
• After having gotten dressed, I went to the
  shopping center.

• Im sorry for having been late.

• Im really sorry for having forgotten to phone

• Pardonne-moi de ne pas avoir répondu.
• Pardon me for not having responded.
• Je men veux davoir dit ça.
• I feel bad for having said that.

• When expressing gratitude
• Je vous remercie de m'avoir aidé.
• I thank you for helping me.
• Merci de mavoir présenté Johnny Depp.
• Thank you for introducing Johnny Depp to me.

Negation of the Past Infinitive

• Because avoir/etre is not conjugated, the ne
  pas must go before it.
• Excusez-moi de ne pas être venu.
• Excuse me for not coming (not having come).
• Merci de ne pas avoir fumé.
• Thank you for not having smoked.
• Je suis désolé de ne pas tavoir parlé.
• Im sorry for not having talked to you.
