Holocentridae (Squirrelfish)
  • Brief Introduction
  • Distribution Tropical Atlantic, Indian
Pacific Ocean, adults usually demersal while
larvae planktonic before settle at size of 3 cm
  • Holocentrids are small to moderate size
  • Nocturnal
  • Shelter in the recess of coral reef during the
    day
  • Some spp are commercially important as food fish
  • 6 Indo-Pacific genera, approx. 65 spp

4
  • General Morphology
  • Deep head and trunk, slender tail
  • 25-27 myomeres
  • Moderate to large head slightly compress
    laterally
  • The eyes round large
  • Initially the snout short and truncate but
becomes elongate when rostral spine develop
  • Small gas bladder above anterior portion of gut

5
  • Head Spination
  • Have elongate serrate rostral spine, dorsal spine
    opercular spine
  • Strong serration on the opercular and
    preopercular margin

6
  • Pigmentation
  • Young larvae lightly pigmented but later become
moderate to heavily pigmented on the gut and
    develop melanophores on the brain
  • Melanophores may also occur of on the ventral
edge of tail, on the buds fins, on the tip of
the rostral spine on dorsal surface of trunk
  • In larger postflexion larvae, pigment covers the
    entire body surface

7
  • Similar Families
  • Prior to the development of the rostral spine,
may be confused with leiognathids, lethrinids,
    cepolids, caproids priacanthids all which
    develop supraocciptal crest and spine.Cepolids
have 48 myomeres while holocentrid 27. The dorsal
edge of the crest of the other familis does not
have one or two spines like holocentrids
