Questions Answered in This Lesson
  • Why is lying common today?
  • What does the Bible say about it?
  • How are lies committed?
  • What are the consequences of lying?
  • What should be our attitude toward it?

3
Lying is a Common Problem
  • It is easy to do
  • It is habit forming
  • It gets one out of a bind quickly
    (fear, profit, hurt others, etc.)
  • It is easily justified, excused or minimized
  • It is committed by good men like Abraham,
    Isaac, and Peter

4
Lying is a Common Problem
  • Some enjoy lying (Psa. 624)
  • Some lie to protect themselves (Gen.
    1211-13 202 267 Isa. 2815)
  • Some lie for gain (2 Pet. 21-3)

5
The Bible and Lying
  • Satan is the father of lies (Gen. 34 Jn. 844)
  • Lying is condemned in the OT (Lev. 1911)
  • God hates liars (Prov. 617,19 1222 195,9)
  • The first recorded sin in the NT church was lying
    (Ac. 53)
  • Lying is condemned in the NT (1 Tim. 110)
  • All liars will be punished (Rev. 218)

6
The Bible and Lying
  • Is it sometimes right to lie? What about Rahab
    the harlot?
  • She was a harlot and a liar (Joshua 21-7)
  • She is commended for her faith in God, not her
prostitution or lying (Heb. 1131 James
    225)
  • Lying is always wrong!
  • No such things as little white lies
  • No situation that justifies lying

7
How Lies Are Committed
  • Speaking that which is not true (Prov. 1219
    Eph. 425 1 Tim. 27 1 Jn. 221)
  • This can be done in religion (1 K. 1311ff
    Jer. 1414 2332 Ezek. 136-19)
  • This can be done through gossip, blasphemy,
    malice, slander, backbiting, boasting,
half-truths, lying to self, carelessness, etc.
  • Taking a true statement out of context (Mk.
    1457-58 compare with Jn. 222)

8
How Lies Are Committed
  • Remaining silent
  • Acting out of duplicity (Mt. 2648-49)
  • Acting hypocritically living a lie
    (1 Jn. 16,8, 24 420 Jer. 74-11)

9
Consequences of Lying
  • Hurt self (Gen. 314ff Psa. 1201-4 Rom.
    125-26)
  • Hurt others (Gen. 1217-18 2610 Prov.
    1217-21 1425 2518-19 2628 Isa. 327
    Jer. 93-5)
  • Lie to God (Hos. 713 Acts 54)
  • Tracks cannot be covered forever (Gen.
    268 Prov. 195,9)

If you tell the truth, you have to remember only
one story.
10
Consequences of Lying
  • Benefits are momentary (Prov. 216)
  • Creates delusions (Jer. 2332)
  • Become hardened (1 Tim. 41-2)
  • Destroys influence

11
Lying Would Be Nice IF
  • We could get away with it, but we cant (Num.
    3223 1 Tim. 54)
  • It would change the truth, but it wont (Rom.
    124-25)
  • It would do any good, but it wont (Rom.
    38)
  • It would keep us from Hell, but it wont (Rev.
    218)

12
Our Attitude Toward Lying
  • Recognize it as the evil it is
  • Hate it (Psa. 316 404 11928-29,163
    Prov. 135 308)
  • Rebuke it (Tit. 112-13 Rev. 22)
  • Put it off (Col. 39)
  • Love truth (1 Kings. 1311ff 2 Thess. 29-12)

If you tell a lie big enough, loud enough and
long enough, a lot of people will believe you.
13
Our Attitude Toward Lying
  • Guard your heart (Mt. 1519-20)
  • Speak truth no matter the cost (Eph. 425)

14
Liar, Liar
  • We serve a God who cannot and will not lie (Tit.
    12 Heb. 618)
  • As such, God will not accept liars into heaven
    (Psa. 1017 Rev. 1415 2127 2215)
  • Where will you spend eternity? In Heaven as a
truth-teller, or in Hell as a liar?
