- Effort to date
- Timeline for moving the project foreword
- Discussion
4Overview of project
- Goal streamline the process to produce a
credible and high-quality plan for managing data - Eight institutions coming together
- Developing a flexible online tool, DMP Tool, to
help researchers generate data management plans - Leveraging the work of the Digital Management
Plan Online from the DCC - Tool will have multiple phases
5Driving forces behind the effort
- Funding
- The alternative, a go it alone strategy, will
only lead to dangerous isolation yielding
idiosyncratic, expensive, and ultimately
unsustainable infrastructures. - Leverage expertise
- Allow researchers to focus on research (and
benefit from managing data)
(New Roles for New Times, ARL, 2011)
6 The what and why of a DMP
- Content Characteristics the types of data,
samples, physical collections, software - Standards the standards to be used for data and
metadata format and content - Access policies for access and sharing ,
provisions for appropriate protection of privacy,
confidentiality, security, intellectual property - Sharing policies and provisions for re-use,
re-distribution - Archiving plans for archiving data, samples,
and other research products, and for preservation
of access to them.
- National funding agencies have data sharing
polices - Scientific journals (Nature, Science, and PLoS)
have sharing requirements. - Distributing research results may increase
citations (Piwowar et al., 2007) - A shared, common data set may help researchers
collaborate and accelerate discoveries (NY
Times, 2010). - Sharing research products is increasingly
important (Nature, 2009 Science, 2011). - For the researcher
- helps organize data
- cultivate quality and efficiency
- help with preserving and sharing data

9A look at the DMP Tool
- Will produce an editable document for submission
to a funding agency - Phase 1 will provide foundation for future
releases - Accommodate versions as funding requirements
change - Open source -- bitbucket
- Allows partner institutions to customize
- An emphasis on delivering guidance and help
- Four types of users / administrators
- Researcher
- Editor
- Funder
- Institution

their organizations authentication gateway --
pick up branding

organizations routing users through their own
authentication system.

22Discussion / challenges
- These are early days
- Building a tool that will satisfy the local and
general - Bringing all the stakeholders together
- Funder participation
- When will the tool be available?
- How to participate?
