Title: From Willie to Richard: A Family of Tincanium Stoves
1From Willie to RichardA Family of Tincanium
Stoves
- Paul S. Anderson, PhD (Dr. TLUD)
- and
- Hugh McLaughlin, PhD, PE
A presentation at the ETHOS 2010 Conference,
Seattle, Washington, 29 January 2010
2Tincanium refers to the use of tin cans to
construct something.
- Coined by Tom Reed (and maybe others)
- Alternative and related materials include
- Bucketanium -- Pailonium
- Barrelonium -- Ductworkium
- Obtainium (whatever you can find usually refers
to metal) - (not to be confused with unobtainium that is
mined on the moon Pandora in the Avatar film.) - Not all TLUDs are from tincanium and not all
tincanium stoves are TLUDs (Top-Lit UpDraft).
3- Tincanology is the broad science focused on the
utilization of Tinacanium and related materials. - Tincanologists are those who specialize within
this scientific discipline and believe it is
important. - No Tincanologists have graduated from accredited
programs in Tincanology - However, many bums, hobos and some Stovers seem
skilled in the discipline and continue to amaze
the rest of the world with their ingenuity. - Many refuge camp designs are based on this
construction method and can represent a
significant improvement for people in times of
real hardship.
4Richard A 10-can Tin Can Stove
- This tincanium patriarch was created by Richard
Boyt of Neosho, Missouri, USA in the 1990s. - Richards Ten-can stove uses many different
sizes. - Our Tincanium family does not go higher than 10
cans. But maybe someday?

5Willie One-can and the Stove Factory
- Made from a single tin can. These three are
TLUDs. - Also with 1-can are the Buddy Burners of wax
and cardboard used by Girl Scouts.
Riser for natural draft. Concentrator disk sits
on indented metal of the top of the secondary air
holes (red arrows). Fuel chamber has holes in the
bottom for primary air, therefore this Willie
is raised on nails or small rods.
6Toucan StovesYes, they are made of two cans.
- The trademark name for Hugh McLaughlins designs
of homemade tincanium TLUDs. - Some of his designs have more or fewer tin cans.
Hugh can barely count past one on a good day - Others peoples stoves may be from 2 cans, but
they are not genuine Toucan stoves. - Complete instructions on the Web

7Freakin 3-can Stoves
- There are many stove designs with three tin cans.

8Nono 9-can Stoves
- Nono in Portuguese means nineth but looks
like a double no. - Nine in German means No.
- No specific tincanium stove with 9 cans has been
actively promoted. - There certainly can be nine-can stoves, but
they are unknown.
9Octo-stoves with 8 Cans
- Similar to the Nono can stoves, the
Octo-stoves await some creativity by tincanium
Stovers. - A Do-It-Yourself kit is available in your pantry
or local re-cycle bins
1-Tomato paste
2-Tuna fish cat food
3-Soups vegetables
8-Popcorn tins buckets
4-Juices ravioli spray paint
5-Coffee 10 tins
6-Paint (1-gallon)
7-Rectangular
10Septic-can 7-can Stoves
- Septic could be a misspelling of septem
meaning seven in Latin. - We suspect that the septic-can stoves have
something to do with either clean combustion or
clean colons. - Or possibly the Septi-can stove is a
misspelling of Pepsi-can stove, but that one is
constructed from only one can, burns alcohol, and
is of aluminum. (Therefore it cannot be tin
canium.)
11Sex-tican 6-can Stoves
- Known to be made cooperatively by two consenting
adults. - The fire is usually within and may be necessary
to get things cooking. - Self-extinguishing ..
- Click here to receive information in a
plain-paper envelope. - Sorry, we will not be discussing these
Sex-tican stoves with such cultured people as
yourselves.
12Penta-can 5-can Stoves
- There are numerous cook stove designs that use
five tin cans. - However, because of their military
significance - All penta-can stove designs are classified.
- If we told you about them, we would need to send
you to Guantanamo for the duration of the
struggle against indoor air pollution (IAP).
13Voldemort The Most Awesome Tincanium Stove
- Constructed from four metal containers.
- Called Voldy for short, and suspected to be a
TLUD. - Has awesome attributes
- Long life (some say it has seven lives).
- Wide-spread (even able to enter Hogwarts School)
- Metal sides that are respected by Potters.
- Clean burning (does not need an invisibility
cloak on emissions) - Has many followers, and is spreading around the
world. - This is the stove that must not be named. Your
mother told you not to call them
four-can-stoves.

This family certainly has many close tincanium
relatives in all parts of the World. Also, we
recognize the importance of all the families of
stoves, including those featuring mud, clay,
brick, sheet-metal, cast-iron, and the Muggles
of mixed heritage.
