recent graduate of the Illinois Institute of
Technology, Julien Branlard isthe first
recipient of the John Bardeen Engineering
Fellowship. "Julien will make an outstanding
addition to Fermilab," said Ralph Pasquinelli,
Accelerator Division RF Department Head and the
inspiration behind the fellowship. "He's an
articulate, talented team player who will hit the
ground running with his outstanding engineering
skills." Branlard began his studies in France
and transferred to the Illinois Institute of
Technology in 2000. After graduating with a Ph.D.

TOEFL OR IELTS (Ingénierie/Science)
  • IITs TOEFL Policy ( effective Fall 2011)
  • Students with an iBT OVERALL SCORE OF 90 and
above may be unconditionally admitted ( if all
other elements meet IITs admission requirements)
  • Students with an iBT score of less than 70 will

will be placed into ESL courses on the basis of
their scores in three of the four sections
    Listening Comprehension, Reading Comprehension
    Writing
  • A score of less than 20 in a section would place
that student into the corresponding course ENGL
051, ENGL 052 and ENGL 053 respectively at the
regular cost of tuition per course for the year

REVISED GRE GENERAL TEST
  • In August 2011, the GRE revised General Test
replaced the GRE General Test. Featuring the new
test-taker friendly design and new questions, the
revised test more closely reflects the kind of
thinking you'll do in graduate or business school
and demonstrates that you are ready for
    graduate-level work.
  • Verbal Reasoning Measures your ability to
analyze and evaluate written material and
synthesize information obtained from it, analyze
relationships among component parts of sentences
and recognize relationships among words and
    concepts.
  • Quantitative Reasoning Measures problem-solving
ability, focusing on basic concepts of
arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis.
  • Analytical Writing Measures critical thinking
and analytical writing skills, specifically your
ability to articulate and support complex ideas
    clearly and effectively.

50
The GRE GENERAL REVISED TESThttp//www.ets.org/gr
e/revised_general/about/content/
  • VERBAL REASONING
  • The Verbal Reasoning section measures your
    ability to
  • analyze and draw conclusions from discourse
reason from incomplete data identify author's
    assumptions and/or perspective understand
multiple levels of meaning, such as literal,
    figurative and author's intent
  • select important points distinguish major from
minor or relevant points summarize text
understand the structure of a text
  • understand the meanings of words, sentences and
    entire texts understand relationships among
    words and among concepts
  • Featuring new types of questions, the Verbal
Reasoning section measures your ability to
understand what you read and how you apply your
    reasoning skills.

51
The GRE GENERAL REVISED TESThttp//www.ets.org/gr
e/revised_general/about/content
  • QUANTITATIVE REASONING
  • The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your
    ability to
  • understand quantitative information
  • interpret and analyze quantitative information
  • solve problems using mathematical models
  • apply basic mathematical skills and elementary
    mathematical concepts of arithmetic, algebra,
    geometry, probability and statistics
  • With increased emphasis on data interpretation
and real-life scenarios, this section has new
types of questions that require you to show your
quantitative reasoning ability. To reduce the
emphasis on computation, the computer-based test
includes an on-screen calculator. And, if you are
taking the paper-based test, a calculator will be
    provided at the test center.

52
The GRE GENERAL REVISED TESThttp//www.ets.org/gr
e/revised_general/about/content
  • ANALYTICAL WRITING
  • The Analytical Writing section measures your
    ability to
  • articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
  • support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
  • examine claims and accompanying evidence
  • sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion
  • control the elements of standard written English
  • The Analytical Writing section requires you to
provide focused responses based on the tasks
presented, so you can accurately demonstrate your
skill in directly responding to a task.

CHOICE OF COURSES AT IIT
  • IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER
  • Not all courses are offered all of the time
  • Some courses will be offered once every two years
  • Some courses will be offered once every year
  • Some courses will be offered each semester
  • Some courses may not be offered/opened if there
are less than 10 students registered for the
    courses
  • What you should do?
  • Regarding electives, discuss with your professor
at your home university, the elective courses you
will need to take for validation alternatives
    submit only once admitted
  • In this case, it is imperative that once
selected, you submit complete documents to IIT
for an early decision well before
  • May 1
