Physics 11
  • Mr. Jean
  • September 9th, 2014

2
The plan
  • Video clip of the day
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vOe3St1GgoHQ
  • Safety contracts
  • HW check
  • Why Physics
  • Finish Quantum Futures Video

3
Lab safety Contracts
  • Please get the safe contracts out
  • Also, while waiting I would like to check the
homework next. Please get it out.

4
Work to complete in class
  • Complete the rest of the scientific notation and
    re-arranging assignment for tomorrow.
  • You have 15 minutes right now to get as much done
    as possible.
  • Do not forget the lab safety contracts!

Quantum Futures
  • Teleportation?
  • Space Ladders?
  • Un-smashable cars?
  • Invisibility?

8
Questions from Quantum Futures
  • There are 10 questions from the video Quantum
futures which you will need to copy down.
  • Leave 3 to 5 spaces between each question.

9
Quantum Futures
  1. What does mastery of matter mean for our future?
  2. What are some of the differences between the
quantum level and our physical world?
  3. What are super conductors? What do they do?

10
  1. How was invisibility created at the micro-wave
    level?
  2. What are carbon nanotubes? What will they do to
    every day materials?
  3. How will nano-robots change medicine? Do you
    trust it?
  4. What are some of the problems with
    nano-technology for future sustainable?

11
  1. What is a self assembler? According to the video
will you see it in your lifetime? What would you
    make?
  2. What is teleportation? How have we accomplished
    this?
  3. In your opinion what field of technology will
have the greatest use for Nano-technology. (ie
    Health, Construction, Communication,
    Transportation)

12
Kinematics
  • That branch of physics which deals with the
motion of objects without reference to the forces
    which act on the system

13
Vectors Scalars
  • Scalars are quantities we measure in everyday
    life. (Mass, time, energy etc)
  • In physics we normally describe motion in terms
of vector. We have a quantity, but also a
direction the quantity is travelling in.
  • Distance and speed are scalars however positive
    displacement, velocity, and
  • acceleration are vectors.

14
Scalars vs. Vectors
Scalar Quantities Vector Quantities
Distance 15km Displacement 15km N450E
Speed 30 m/s Velocity 30m/s S
15
Position Distance
  • We need a starting point!
  • This lets us describe the position in terms of
    fixed/pre-determined point.
  • Normally we make a reference point of (0, 0).
  • The position of an object is the separation
between that object and a reference point.
  • We use , - to describe its relative position.
