Title: Grade 2 Science Unit: 3 Lesson: 3
1Grade 2 ScienceUnit 3 Lesson 3
- Investigating the
- Effects of Energy
2TEKS 2.6Force, motion and energy The student
knows that forces cause change and energy exists
in many forms. The student is expected to
- TEKS 2.6A
- INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS on an object by
increasing or decreasing amounts of light, heat,
and sound energy such as how the color of an
object appears differently in dimmer light or how
heat melts butter.
3- Here is what you need to be sure to teach!!
- (found on page 1 of this unit)
4- Give the students a list of 5 things to touch.
- file cabinet
- desk top
- metal leg of a chair
- plastic chair
- carpet
5With you writing on the board, have the students
list these items from coolest to warmest.
- List the items from coolest to warmest
- 1. file cabinet
- 2. metal leg of chair
- 3. desk top
- 4. plastic chair
- 5. carpet
6Next, have the students record this information
in their journals.
7Next, come up with a class (accurate) definition
for the word HEAT.a form of energy
- Consider letting the students draw 2 or 3
pictures of items that produce heat.

10- This is a teacher demo.
- be sure to ask how the lamp is similar to or
different from the sun - dont forget to have the students predict (using
pictures and words) what will happen when the
tray is placed under the lamp
11This is how the lab might look. You need a 100W
bulb!! It takes TIME!!
12Journal Entry IdeaStudents record lab findings
13What Happens When I Add HEAT??
Suggestion If you use a lamp in your room, it
takes TIME for the butter and chips to melt. So,
start the lab, go on with your day and record
results periodically during the day on the board.
Have students record the chart at the end of the
day during science.
Minutes Under the Lamp ICE BUTTER Chocolate Chips
14Then record the room temp , frig and freezer
info in the same fashion
Time _at_ room temp ICE BUTTER Chocolate Chip
Time in frig ICE BUTTER Chocolate Chip
Time in freezer ICE BUTTER Chocolate Chip
15- This is the lab sheet for this activity. You
can certainly use the sheet as isor.
16Consider this..
- Model on the board and have students copy!!!

18Since we suggested that you delete the lesson
where the students draw pictures, then you will
need to delete the GALLERY WALK.
- So, we suggest you find pictures of different
sources of light energy.
19We now know there are different sources of
light. Now we will explore what happens to an
object when the amount of light shining on it is
increased or decreased.
20Needed Materials
21 How about this as an idea for a center???
- How can increasing and decreasing light energy
affect objects?
22A Listening Walk
23Sound Cups
24(No Transcript)
25The same items can be used for both styles of
sound cups.
26We tried to incorporate all the aspects of the
performance indicator within the lessons
presented today. So, if you are running short
of time, you dont have to do this.
27Thank you for ALL you do for SCIENCEand the
kids of MISD!!!
