What Are We Learning?
Standards
S3L1a. Differentiate between habitats of Georgia
(mountains, marsh/swamp, coast, Piedmont,
Atlantic Ocean) and the organisms that live there.
S3L1b. Identify features of green plants that
allow them to live and thrive in different
regions of Georgia.
S3L1c. Identify features of animals that allow
them to live and thrive in different regions of
Georgia.
S3L1d. Explain what will happen to an organism if
the habitat is changed.
S3L2a. Explain the effects of pollution (such as
littering) to the habitats of plants and animals.
3
What Are We Learning?
Essential Questions
What is the difference between Georgias 5
habitats? What do plants and animals need to
live in their habitats? How can I help the
habitats thrive?
Lesson Focus
What is a habitat? What is adaptation?
4
What is a habitat ?
5
  • A habitat is the place where living things
    (organisms) live.
  • It is more than just a home it includes the whole
    surrounding area.
  • The habitat provides the animal or plant with
    food or shelter.

6
People and Their Habitats
  • People can live all over the world.

7
  • We can do this because we are able to build
    homes for different conditions.

8
Also we can change our clothes to best suit the
temperature around us.
Animal skin and fur act as insulators and keep
heat in.
White clothes reflect the heat.
9
Animals and Plants
  • Most plants and animals are specially adapted to
    survive in a particular habitat.
  • They have developed special features to suit the
    demands of their environment.
  • This is called adaptation.

10
Some Examples of Adaptation
11
  • All birds have similar characteristics.
  • But many water birds have features that are
different from those birds live on land.

12
  • Some animals are camouflaged to blend in with
    their surroundings.
  • This keeps them safe. Its harder for other
animals to see them or catch them for food.

These zebra could easily be mistaken for
bushes from a distance.
13
  • Aquatic animals have streamlined bodies to
move more easily in the water.

14
  • These animals have adapted to live in the hot
    climate of the desert.

15
  • These animals have adapted to be more suited to
    cold temperatures.

16
  • Even plants have adapted to their habitats.

17
Animals and plants help each other
  • Plants and animals depend on each other for a
    wide variety of things.
