that interact in a place.
- The plants and animals that are found in a
particular location are referred to as an
ecosystem. These plants and animals depend on
each other to survive. In a delicate balance,
these life forms help to sustain one another in
regular patterns. Disruptions to an ecosystem can
be disastrous to all organisms within the
ecosystem.

6Mountain Habitats in Georgia
- Georgias mountains are located in North Georgia.
They get more rain and snow than any other part
of the state. The mountains can be warm in
summer, but temperatures often drop below
freezing in the winter. - The animals that live in the mountains must be
able to survive cold winters. Bobcats and skunks
grow more fur in winter to help t hem stay warm.
Bats hibernate in mountain caves. Many animals
like snakes and turtles, are less active during
winter. Most birds migrate south for the winter.
Red squirrels are only found in pine forests in
the mountains, and smoky shrews live in burrows
in the Blue Ridge Mountains. - Mountain soil is very rocky and shallow. Where
the soil is only a few inches deep, grasses,
wildflowers, and small shrubs grow. Where there
is deeper soil, forests of oaks, maples, poplars,
and beeches cover the land.
7Piedmont An area, with many hills, located
between the mountains and the coastal plain.
8Georgias Piedmont Habitat
- The piedmont is the region just south of the
mountains. It has many rolling hills. A thick
layer of red clay soil covers much of the
piedmont. Many streams and small rivers run
through the region. - Before many people settled in Georgia, the
piedmont had mostly oak and hickory trees. Now
the forests are mostly pine trees. Sweet gums,
beeches, maples, elms, and birches still grow
near the rivers. - The animals that live in this habitat are birds,
chipmunks, deer, fox, squirrels, and white-footed
mice. Spotted salamanders survive in the forests
by eating worms, insects, and snails. In fields
and pastures, you can find butterflies, birds,
foxes, and coyotes. - In the rivers of the piedmont region, there are
shoal bass, sunfish, and catfish. Beavers build
dams and lodges on the smaller streams.
9Coastal plain An area of low, flat land near an
ocean.
10Georgias Coastal Plain Habitat
- The land is flat and the soils are sandy.
Compared to other regions in Georgia, it has mild
winters and hot summers. This is where the
coastal plain meets the ocean. Salty spray from
the ocean covers the beaches and sand dunes.
Only a few plants, such as sea oats and beach
grass can survive the salty sand. - Sweet gum, magnolia, bay, and hickory trees grow
along streams. In the flatwoods of the coastal
plain grow pine, live oak, saw palmetto, wax
myrtle, and wiregrass. - Deer, bobcats, eastern diamondback rattlesnakes,
skunks, opossums, raccoons, quail, and many
songbirds live there.
11Wetland Land that is covered with water most of
the time
12Georgias Wetland Habitat
- Wetlands are found in every region of Georgia.
(Bogs are found in the mountains, marshes are
found near the coast, and swamps are found on the
coastal plain.) - Mountain bogs, piedmont marshes, and swamps in
the coastal plain are all types of wetlands. The
soil is usually wet and spongy. Many wetland
plants, such as waterlillies, have long stems
that grow under water. - Many animals had adaptations for living in
wetlands. Some ducks dive under water to get
food. Alligators can stay under water for a long
time without breathing.
