North Korea says leader's uncle was executed

• An uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has
  been executed for trying to overthrow the
  government, the state-run news agency reported
  early Friday. "Traitor Jang Song Thaek Executed"
  blared the headline posted by the state-run news
  agency about the man who, until recently, had
  been regarded as the nation's second-most
  powerful figure.
• Once his guilt was established, Jang was
  immediately executed, it said. Jang had betrayed
  his party and leader. Marcus Noland, a senior
  fellow at the Peterson Institute for
  International Economics, told CNN on Thursday,
  "I've been following North Korea for 20 years and
  I do not remember them ever publicly announcing
  the execution of a senior leader. You hear rumors
  about it, but this theatrical arrest earlier in
  the week and now this execution are
  unprecedented."
• He added, "The regime, I think, is trying to
  intimidate anyone that might have independent
  ideas."

• Several people were stabbed Thursday night in a
  parking lot outside the Denver Broncos football
  game, police said. At least three people were
  slashed in the scuffle at a parking lot near
  Sports Authority Field at Mile High, said Denver
  Police Sgt. Steve Warneke. One of the victims was
  in critical condition, Warneke said. Officers
  were also trying to determine if there was a
  fourth stabbing victim that did not wait to be
  transported by an ambulance, police said. The
  incident occurred at about 10 p.m. MT, but it was
  unclear what started the altercation.
• In a much-anticipated report, the United Nations
  has concluded that chemical weapons have been
  used in the Syrian conflict. Experts investigated
  seven instances of alleged use and found that
  chemical weapons were either used, or likely
  used, in five of those instances. The case that
  was most clear to inspectors was an August
  incident near the capital, Damascus. "The United
  Nations Mission collected clear and convincing
  evidence that chemical weapons were used also
