Anti Suffrage Movement

• They had two reasons to deny women the right to
  vote
• Women were powerful enough without the vote
• Giving them the right to vote would blur the
  distinction between men and women and make them
  seem more masculine

Suffragist Strategies

• Make a constitutional amendment
• Takes two thirds of Congress
• Must be ratified by three fourths of the state
  legislatures
• Get individual states to permit women to vote
• In 1917 U.S. goes into WWI
• Women take jobs left by men
• Volunteer for ambulance and nursing jobs
• All this brings womens accomplishments into the
  public eye

Victory

• 1918 Congress formally proposed the suffrage
  amendment
• August 6, 1918 the 19th amendment giving women
  the right to vote was declared ratified
