• Parliament offers the throne to William and Mary
  IF they accept The English Bill of Rights
  creating a system of government based on law a

• Ensured authority of Parliament over monarchy
• Required the monarch to summon Parliament
  regularly
• Gave the House of Commons the power of the
  purse
• Monarch could not interfere in Parliamentary
  debates or suspend laws
• Restated traditional rights (trial by juryP
• Abolished excessive fines cruel punishments
• Affirmed the principle of habeas Corpus

Toleration Act 1689

• Parliament grants Puritans, but not Catholics,
  the right to free public worship
• England becomes one of the most tolerant nations
  in Europe

• By deposing one king and establishing another,
