Definition of an Apprenticeship
  • To study a trade under the guidance of
    journeyperson
  • To complete on the job training as well as the
    trade school requirements
  • Timelines to complete an apprenticeship differ
    for the different trades and trade sectors
  • (ie. Service, Construction, Motive Power and


    Industrial)

WHAT IS OYAP?
  • Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)
    provides secondary school students an opportunity
    to begin working on an apprenticeship while still
    in high school

Definition of an OYAP Student
  • A student who is receiving cooperative education
    credits for work experience in an apprenticeship
    occupation.
  • May or may not be formally registered as an
    apprentice while in secondary school.
  • The students cooperative education personalized
    placement learning plan (PPLP) must be based on
    the Apprenticeship Training Standards.
  • In restricted trades under the ACA students must
    be registered as apprentices in order to receive
    training.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
  • OYAP students master skills towards a certificate
    of qualification in a skilled profession at the
    same time as they earn their Ontario Secondary
    School Diploma (OSSD)
  • OYAP is designed to help secondary school
    students make a smooth transition into their
    post-secondary education.

The Process for Registration
  • Complete the London Apprenticeship OYAP Tracking
    Form
  • Submit the completed form to your OYAP
    coordinator
  • OYAP Coordinator submits to MTCU
  • MTCU will forward a letter directly to the
    employer

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
  • Students must
  • be 16 years of age or older
  • have completed 16 credits towards their OSSD
  • be enrolled as a full-time student
  • complete all compulsory credits required for OSSD

OYAP Registration Part One
  • Cooperative education teacher discusses OYAP with
    the student, employer and parent
  • Complete T.V.D.S.B., OYAP Registration Form
  • E-mail form to OYAP coordinator, who then makes
    contact with the training consultant, at MTCU

Part Two - Ministry of Training Colleges and
Universities
  • Arranges sign-on with employer and student
  • Training Consultant will track the apprentice
    using the Training Standards
  • T.C. will support the apprentice with trade
    related information, and ensure that the
    apprentice received appropriate training at the
    placement

The Process for Registration
  • Training Consultant, MTCU will arrange to meet
    with the student at their placement
  • Parental signature will be required for students
    under 18
  • Group signing One night at the School

Implications for OYAP Student
  • Under no circumstances can a student perform any
    of the skills in the restricted trades without
    being registered as an apprentice.

Implications for an OYAP Student
  • Compulsory Trades under the TQAA
  • OYAP students can be registered to participate in
    these trades (plumber, electrician)
  • The students participating in OYAP are exempt
    from the journeyperson apprentice ratio
    provisions of the TQAA

Myth vs. Realty
  • Myth Skilled trades jobs are boring and
    repetitive
  • Realty People in these jobs work with some of
    the most sophisticated equipment available they
    build and design cars, buildings and robots
    their training is leading-edge they need to be
    smart and able to adapt

  • 53 of companies advertised for skilled workers
    last year 29 could not fill those positions
  • In the auto industry, within 5/6 years, 50,000
    skilled trades people will need to be replaced
    (CARS Council)
  • Experts predict Canadas worst skills shortage is
    less than 5 years away
