What is E-mail ?

• A efficient method to send and receive message
• Digital data instead of conventional letter
• ISP will provide every user a user name, an
  e-mail address and a password
• User need his own password to open his own mail
  box

The "E-mail Window

• Netscape Mail-box
• Mailbox button
• Inbox received mail
• Sent sent mail
• Trash deleted mail
• Unsent prepared for sent mail

Send E-mail

• Press the new message button
• Prepare the mail message
• Enter the address of the receivers
• Press the send button

"Cc and Bcc

• Carbon Copy and Blind Carbon copy
• Cc used to send the mail to a third party
• Other receivers will not notice Bcc used to send
  the mail to a third party and the receiver

Get Message

• Open Netscape mailbox window
• Press get message button
• Enter password
• Select one of the mails from the list

Attach File

• Used to attach computer file in your mail
• Open Netscape mailbox window
• Press new message button
• Prepare the content of the mail
• Enter receivers address
• Select mode of sending (to/cc/bcc etc)
• Press attach button
• Select file
• Select the file to be attached from directory
• Press open file
• The attached file will be sent together with the
  mail

Get Message with File "Attached

• Mail with attached file will show a clip sign at
  the message
• Name of the attached file will be shown at the
  bottom of the mail
• Click the name of the file can open/save the
  attached file

Reply Message

• Open a received message
• Press reply button
• Select reply to sender or reply to sender and
  all recipients
• Prepare the mail and send
• Receivers will receive the reply together with
  the original mail

Newsgroup

• Discussion group
• User may join a number of newsgroups according to
  his interest

Subscribe the "Newsgroup

• Click the Newsgroup button
• Enter discussion group name/select group from
  list
• Click the subscribe button
• Press enter

Unsubscribe the "Newsgroup

• Select subscribed Newsgroup
• Press the unsubscribe button

• Lab1 Search for the information of buying a
  computer

  supervisor

What is Download ?

• Duplication of software/image files from the
  internet web site to the users computer.
• User may obtain useful information from the
  internet.
• Freeware software that may be downloaded free of
  charge.
• Shareware software that may be downloaded and to
  be used for a limited period.

How to Download Software ?

• Point at the hyperlink that contain the content
  to be downloaded.
• Click the hyperlink.
• Select directory to hold the file to be
  downloaded.
• Click Save.

How to Search Freeware ?

• Use search engines
• Obtain from the introduction of newspapers and
  magazines.
• e.g. www.family.games.com
• Sometimes specific driver is required for running
  of freeware.

FTP Site

• FTP sites are designed for holding of
  files/software for users to download.
• Usually these files/software are freeware.
• Users may also be allowed to upload files.
• Examples of FTP sites
• ftp//ftp.hku.hk
• ftp//ftp.microsoft.com
• You may use a FTP client (e.g. WS_FTP) to
  interact with a FTP site.

Application - ICQ

• ICQ (I Seek You-Geddit?) is a server of network
  chatting.
• User may chat with other users through the ICQ
  web page.
• ICQ freeware may be downloaded from
  http//www.icq.com/download/
• User required to be registered before using ICQ.

Application - Internet Phone

• User may talk like using telephone through the
  computer.
• Microphone, sound card and internet phone
  software are required.
• One of the internet phone web site
  http//www.vocaltec.com/iphone.htm

Application - Telnet

• Also known as terminal simulation software.
• It allows user login the remote computer system
  through modem.
• Users computer will be treated as one of the
  terminals in the system.
• Users are required to provide the address and
  password of the system.

Application - Video Conference

• It is a face to face meeting of 2 or more remote
  parties through network
• It requires such peripheral devices as speakers,
  microphone, screen etc.
• Video conferencing reduces the travelling
  requirement of business partners.
