Title: Setting Limits (discipline)

1
Setting Limits (discipline)
2
  • We use limits verses discipline in the preschool.
As teachers we are guiding the children to use
acceptable behavior. In doing so we are teaching
them to make decisions and the consequences to
those decisions. You will be given 5 ways to help
guide children in the preschool. Each person
needs to decide what works best for them. Each
situation may require you to use a different
    method.

3
I-messages
  • Using I messages lets the child know how you
feel and also lets them know that an action
    causes feelings in others.
  • 3 parts feelings, what has happened, reason
  • I feel _____ when you_____ and ______.

4
Giving Information
  • Use a firm voice, not angry or yelling
  • Let child react
  • Use firmer voice or more information if no
    reaction
  • Make sure you are giving information
  • You can not have snack until you wash your hands.

5
Logical Consequences
  • Needs to make sense for the action.
  • Must be given as soon as possible especially the
    younger the child
  • I see you spilled water get a rag and clean it
    up.

6
Using Contingencies
  • They must perform something for the something
    else to happen.
  • Lets the child know what you want and what will
    happen once they do it.
  • When you have your coat on zipped and your hat
and mittens on you can go outside.

7
Making Choices
  • Give two choices you can live with and that are
    appropriate for the child.
  • This makes the child feel in charge
  • You may put your coat on or I will help you.
  • If they do not answer that is the choice. Then
you tell them you will help them.

8
  • Know your limits and ask for help!
