The Backup System
  • Small Backup Responses
  • Quiet, private confrontation between teacher and
    student
  • Speak softly with student (ear warning, private
    meeting)
  • Medium Backup Responses-traditionally used in
    school-time out, loss of privileges, detention,
    parent conferences
  • Risky-may produce feelings of hostility
  • Stay private
  • Large Backup Responses-Very public-sending
    student to the office-may lead to suspension or
    expulsion

  • Purpose of limit setting is stopping behavior
  • Need cooperation of the students
  • Responsibility training helps teachers get that
    cooperation
  • Find something the students value-incentive
    system to teach cooperation

  • Penalty-take PAT time away for time spent
    off-task
  • Rule of Penalties-every penalty implies a
    corresponding bonus
  • PAT (Preferred Activity Time)-permitting students
    to hang with each other and do nothing
  • Teaching and having fun are blended into one
    activity that the students come up with

Omission Training
  • One to students chronically ruin PAT time
  • Individualized incentive program for defiant
    students so they dont continually ruin PAT time
    for others
  • Make defiant students heroes by being able to add
    time to PAT
  • Private meeting to set goals
  • Class meeting explaining added time with class

  • Explain time is added and applaud defiant student
