Part 1 Warming up
  • The following questions refer only to things
  • that happened to You or Your Partner during
  • the last six years .
  • Did you have your (picked/purse snatched ) ?

14
Part 2 Reading Comprehension
  • Fingerprint technology has developed more in its
east 15 years than it did in the first 100 years.
Advancements in technology have led to new
    capabilities allowing investigators to pull
prints from surfaces that used to be very
    difficult or even impossible.
  • The key points to any of the following
systems include accuracy, reliability, ease of
use, open system design (compatibility to various
    computer platforms), easy serviceability and
    expandability.
  • There are several innovative products IBIS,
TENPRINTER, FingerPrinter CMS, FaceIt and BNP
that will shape future investigation and crime
    prevention methodology.

15
  • The product with the greatest potential to impact
officers in the short-term is IBIS,a
    revolutionary mobile identification system that
    captures forensic quality fingerprints and
Photographs. TENPRINTER and FingerPrinter CMS are
    live scan systems,which capture fingerprint
images without the use of ink. Law
    enforcement,government agencies,airport,banks and
    other commercial institutions are increasingly
    using these systems.
  • FaceIt is a widely deployed facial
recognition software that allows computers to
rapidly and accurately detect and recognize
faces. Its uses include ID verification, surveillan
    ce,information security and banking. BNP
    incorporates FaceIt technology for implementation
    over large-scale network and real-time
    identification.

16
  • IBIS is a handheld portable device known as. a
    remote data terminal(RDT),which captures
    data(including photographs),forensic-quality
fingerprint images and magnetic stripe data. The
data is transmitted wirelessly to a laptop in a
squad car and to the central IBIS server via the
police radio communication system or cellular
communications. At the IBIS server, the data is
    processed
  • and transferred to one or more AFIS databases. If
    a fingerprint match exists,identification
information -is transferred back to the RDT.If
there is no match, the fingerprint and photo files
    are discarded from the system.
  • Fingerprint scanning capability while
officers are on patrol is highly desirable, but
dependable technology is just coming around.

17
  • A report released by a group of experts after the
first week of operation indicated IBIS was used
173 times in test and operational
    scenarios,returning 71 matches,including four
individuals who gave false information to
    officers,against the Automated Fingerprint
    Identification System(AFIS).The, experts
confirmed the information returned by IBIS and
    identified outstanding warrants against the
    individuals.Additionally,IBIS successfully
identified a body found in an apparent suicide of
an individual who had a prior criminal record.
  • The future application of these technologies
will keep law enforcement current in a
technology-driven .world that is rapidly changing
    on all fronts.

Part 4Exercises
  • Please decide whether the following are TRUE or
    FALSE according to the text.
  • ( )1. Fingerprint technology advanced much more
slowly in the past one hundred years than it has
    in the recent fifteen years.
  • ( )2.These innovative devices will play an
important role in the investigation and
    preventive work.
  • ( )3.FaceIt will be most effective of all the
    products.
  • ( )4. IBIS will be most widely used whether in
    law enforcement or financial businesses.

24
  • ( )5. FaceIt and other innovative products have
been applied widely in the American law
    enforcement.
  • ( )6.The successful matching rate done by IBIS
    is 41.
  • ( )7.To the crime scene investigators,Facelt is
more useful because they can save much time in
taking the fingerprints they find to the police
    department to match.
  • ( )8. The advantage of the products is their
    capability of providing identification
    information quickly.

Amazon
27
The Amazon Rainforest is the worlds greatest
natural resourcethe most powerful and
bio-actively diverse natural phenomenon on the
planet. Yet still it is being destroyed just like
other rainforests around the world. The problem
and the solution to rainforest destruction are
both economic. Rainforests are being destroyed
worldwide for the profits they yieldmostly
harvesting unsustainable resources like timber,
for cattle and agriculture, and for subsistence
cropping by rainforest inhabitants.
28
Discussion Questions
  • Do you enjoy the beauty of the rain forest where
different kinds of animals live in harmony with
each other? What can human being do to protect
    that?
  • What do you think of the statement we human
being and other species share the same globe?

3. Work in pairs to discuss what ecology is?
Ecology is the study of the relationships
among plants, animals, people, and their
environment and the balance among these
relationships. An ecologist may study the
behavior of individuals. Among the
characteristics studied would be the
food-gathering techniques of individuals, the
survival adaptations against predation, etc.
30
4. Work in pairs to discuss what environment is ?
Environment is the complex of physical,
chemical and biotic factors that act upon an
organism or an ecological community and
ultimately determine its form and survival.

For Fun
Enjoy a Humor   A man was driving along
the country road. Then he saw right in the middle
of a field, there was a farmer standing there
still and doing nothing. He stopped his car and
got out of it. He approached the farmer and asked
I have seen you standing here for quite a few
minutes. What are you doing here? The farmer
answered Im trying to win a Nobel Prize. The
man was very curious and asked How can you win a
Nobel Prize by standing here? Can you guess what
the farmer answered?
32
The farmer answered Ive heard they
give the prize to people who are outstanding
in their field.
