Title: 3 Mathematicians

1
3 Mathematicians
  • By Elizabeth Dotson

2
Sir Issac Newton
  • Born in (1642-1727) England
  • He solved the Delian cube-doubling problem,
before the invention of the calculus variations.
  • He developed many theorems, he proved several
    about quadrilaterals and their in-or
    circumscribing ellipses, and constructed the
parabola defined by four given points.

3
Sir. Issac Newton
  • Newton was a very smart man, who built many well
known inventions, such as the windmill that was
powered by a mouse on a treadmill.
  • At the age of 22, he left the University and
began the revolutionary advances in mathematics,
    optics, dynamics, thermodynamics, acoustics and
    celestial mechanics.
  • Newton is also famous for the Three Laws of
    Motion.

4
Sir Issac Newton
  • Newton ranks 2 on Michael Hart's most famous
list of the Most Influential Person's in History.
Newton would certainly rank as well first on any
list of physicists, or scientists in general.
  • Newton once wroteTruth is ever to be found in
simplicity, and not in multiplicity and confusion
    of things.
  • Newton was buried at Westminster Abbey.

6
Archimedes
  • Born in (287-212 BC) Greek domain
  • Archimedes is known to be the greatest of ancient
    mathematicians.
  • He studied at Euclid's school, and his
achievements are very impressive given the lack
of good mathematical technology and knowledge.

7
Archimedes
  • Archimedes made advances in number theory,
algebra, and analysis, but is the most renowned
for his many theorems of plane and solid
    geometry.
  • He was also the first to prove Heron's formula
for the area of the triangle.
  • One of his most remarkable and famous geometric
results was determining the area of parabolic
section, which he offered two independent proofs,
one using his Principle of the Lever, the other
    using geometric series.

8
Archimedes
  • Some of Archimedes greatest writings are
preserved on a palimpsest which has been
rediscovered and properly studied only since
    1998.
  • Archimedes discovered formulae for the volume and
surface area of a sphere, and may even have even
been the first to notice and prove the simple
relation of the circle's circumference and area.

Maria Gaetana Agnesi
  • 18th century mathematician
  • She was the oldest of 21 children born into the
    family of Pietro Angesi.
  • The Agnesi family was well to do family in Milan,
Italy in the 18th century. Her family came from a
merchant class family and made their money in
    cloth goods.

11
Maria Gaetana Agnesi
  • Her and her sister were regularly put on display
in the salon of their family home. She was adept
at discussing philosophy as well as the sciences
    and mathematics.
  • When she got older, one of her responsibilities
was to tutor her younger brothers in
mathematics. She had a passion for scholarships
including mathematics and had absorbed works by
    Newton.

12
Maria Gaetana
  • Maria had previously published Propsitiones
Philosophicae a volume of about 200 essays on
various topics about her father's conversations.
  • She is also known for Analytical Institutions. It
is the earliest math text ever written by a woman
and translated into English and French for the
    use as a textbook.

13
Maria Gaetana
  • After Maria's father died in 1752. He had left
the family in a lot of debt, and most of their
possessions had to sold to cover it. This changed
Maria's Gaetena lifestyle and set her free to
    purse her passion and happiness.
  • Maria died in 1799, she gave selflessly to
others, she worked with the ill and homeless
people of Milan with what time she had left.
