Current Rock Map
  • Sue Kasahara in her thesis used
  • USGS Digital Elevation Maps
  • Trig
  • standard rock
  • gets column depth of rock as a function of (q,f)
    for Soudan II
  • Updated to MINOS location by Brian Rebel
  • Used in charge ratio paper to get Intensity(q,f)
    to first order
  • Intensity then fit to Crouch curve per dW bin to
    extract surface energy of CRs in that bin
  • Turns uncertainty in rock into uncertainty in Em
    cosq (per bin)
  • Same for m and m- in that bin, so all is OK

DUSEL Geology
  • Much geological surveying has been done for the
    DUSEL/Soudan proposal
  • Primarily by Dean Peterson of UMDs Precambrian
    Research Center
  • See http//soudan.umn.edu/ius for some really
    good stuff
  • We now have very detailed surface topology, and
    3D maps of the geological features underground
  • Including density/composition

Plans
  • Dean Peterson is kindly making available his 3D
    geology maps and models
  • Formatted in GOCAD
  • Steve Farrell (UMD undergrad) is working to
    convert them to MINOS-centered rays
  • Line segments have density, length
  • Integrate up each column in total g/cm2, put in
    (q,f) lookup table class for use in minossoft
  • Will crosscheck with muon intensity
  • Especially in the ore body, much of which has
    been mined, and we dont know the status of
    whats gone, whats been backfilled, whats still
    open air

Uses?
  • Does not change current muon charge paper
  • Could be used to reduce systematic errors in Em
    cosq
  • Enough knowledge to tease out the differential
    dE/dx of m, m-?
  • Dunno.
  • Does it have a way high nifty factor?
  • You betcha!
