Introduction It was a dark and dreadful night
when we discovered the disappearance of the
priceless Lighthouse Diamond.

We all thought it was safe and sound in our super
secure vault in the basement of the Youve Gotta
Have It Jewelry Store.

But alas, the only thing we found was a note.
          
Ha, Ha, Ha. Im not afraid, because youll
never catch me. Im too smart for you. Ill
even leave you a clue.
.and a bag of white powder left in the vault.

The thief left them there to tease and taunt
us. How humiliating this has been!

Suspect 1 Pedro Sanchez

Mr. Sanchez is a loyal customer of the You've
Gotta Have It Jewelry Store. He comes once a
week to look over the newest selection of
diamonds and other jewels. His favorites have
always been diamonds. He loves the way they
sparkle and shine.

He has been acting strange lately. The store
workers have even found him talking to the
Lighthouse Diamond when he thought no one was
watching or listening. They say he was even
telling the stone that "...you will soon be mine!"

He is a very clean person as you can tell by the
way he dresses. He is careful about his
cleanliness probably due to his allergies to many
things cats, dust, cement, Plaster of Paris, any
kind of flowers (especially roses), and sugar.

Suspect 2 Susie B. Sugar

Susie is still in school, but she comes by the
store every once in a while to fantasize about
what her boyfriend will buy her. (The problem is
that her boyfriend is very cheap and the only
thing he has bought her is a bag of popcorn at
the movies.)

She has been looking over the Lighthouse Diamond
every day after school for over two weeks. She
would run to the counter where the diamond was
kept and swoon over it.

In the past few days she has been acting odd.
Instead of her usual happy self, talking a mile a
minute, Susie has been very nervous and
untalkative. Susie loves sweets and junk foods.
She was always coming into the store with a wad
of gum or some kind of candy in her mouth.

When Susie was a small child she did have a very
bad reaction to baking soda. It almost killed
her. Her mother has learned to never have baking
soda in the house. Susie will turn bright red and
blow up like a balloon just by touching the
stuff! She also cant be around corn starch.

Suspect 3 Norman P. Grump

Five years ago, Mr. Grump worked at the You've
Gotta Have It Jewelry Store. He was very
ambitious and could talk anyone into buying
something just by smiling and flashing his baby
blue eyes. He was a very handsome man at that
time and now look at him!

It was all because he was fired from his job at
the store! One day he was helping an older
customer by the name of Betty Kroc and Betty
liked being helped by Norman. In fact, Betty
loved Norman.

She brought him some of her famous corn starch
and flour cookies. (Norman must never be near
corn starch or white flour!) Norman would do
anything if he could get someone to buy something
from him, so he took one bite.... and started
choking and bumping into everything.

He knocked things over and broke a lot of display
cases as he stumbled around trying to catch his
breath. Well, they fired him on the spot and he
swore that he would someday get his revenge! On
the night of the diamond's disappearance, Norman
was seen behind the store.

Suspect 4 Mr. Sub Zero

Sub or "Mr. Zero, as we like to call him, has
been coming in to the store to buy his supply of
diamonds for the past few years. Few people know
that diamonds are the source of his powers. He
goes through quite a few diamonds each month.

Some months are slower for him and he doesn't
need so many diamonds. But lately, there has been
talk that he is gearing up for a big fight and
needs some-thing special, like the Lighthouse
Diamond, to give him some super powers!

Well, he too has been eyeing the Lighthouse
Diamond. Something else that few people know is
that Sub Zero is deathly afraid of salt! You know
how they salt roads that have ice on them to help
melt the ice well, he's afraid someone will salt
him! He also won't go near baking soda!

After analyzing the evidence that was left by the
crook, by using the scientific method, and
studying the profiles of the suspects, your team
of police scientists will present your report to
the Honorable Judge for possible sentencing of
our criminal.

The Task Your ultimate goal is to find out who
the mean and nasty culprit is who committed this
crime. However ...

First, you'll need to brush up on how to do a
Scientific Investigation. We don't want any
mess-ups and destroy all the evidence. You'll
investigate 6 different white powders, looking at
their different properties and reactions to a few
simple tests.

Next, you'll need to investigate the evidence in
the bag that was left by using the Scientific
Method to determine the identity of the white
powder. (It could also be a combination of
different white powders so be careful, this
crook is tricky!)

Then, you'll want to compare the information that
we have on each suspect with the results of your
findings about the mysterious white powder to see
if you can find out who our criminal is.

You'll analyze your team's work by using a
special student rubric.
