.
They spend as much as 75 of their time
underwater, searching for food in the ocean.
They have a streamlined body for efficient
swimming with their average speed in the water
being about 15 miles per hour.
It lives in the southern hemisphere , especially
in Antarctica.
When they are in the water, they dive and flap
their strong wingsIt looks just like they are
flying!

The kiwi is the smallest living ratite and lay
the largest egg, comparing to their body size.
Its body is about the size of a chicken.
It lives in New Zealand and its their national
symbol.
There are five species of kiwi the Great Spotted
Kiwi, the Little Spotted Kiwi, the Okarito Brown
Kiwi, the Brown Kiwi and the North Island Brown
Kiwi.
The kiwi has stayed in its native land because
New Zealand is an isolated island and the kiwi
cant fly.

The emus of Australia are the 2nd largest birds
and can grow to 6 feet tall and weight 100 pounds.
It is a fast runner and eat leaves, grass and
insects.
They live in small flocks on dry areas and
deserts of Australia.
Father emus are the caregivers they build the
nests, warm the eggs and raise the babies until
they are able to take care of themselves.

The dodo was included in the group of pigeons and
was about 1 m tall.
It lived in the forests of Mauritius, a small
island near Madagascar.
Except for its strong beak, it had no other
defence against predators.
People hunted them and brought cats, dogs and
rats which hunted these birds and destroyed their
nests. All this led to the disappearance of this
species in the 17th century.

As you can see, not all birds can fly, although
they have feathers, but flightless birds have
other important skills. Some more flightless
birds are the rheas, the ostriches and the
cassowaries. Flightless birds are getting extinct
because they cant fly from one country to
another.
WHATEVER IS THE REASON,
NONE OF THEM SEEMS TO MIND BEING
STUCK ON THE GROUND!
