Title: THE PASSION
1THE PASSION ACCORDING TO MARK 14,1-15,47
2THE PASSION BEGINS WHEN JESUS ACCEPTS THE
INVITATION TO BE AND
BELOVED SON
SLAVE
3WHEN HE ACCEPTS TO FIND HIS
OASIS
EVEN IN THE
DESERT
4THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE INVITATION IS JESUS WAY
OF SAYING TO GOD
THAT HE WILL DO GODS WILL NO MATTER WHAT THE
CONSEQUENCES
5THE SECOND TIME THE INVITATION IS AFFIRMED AND
CONFIRMED IS AT THE
TRANSFIGURATION
6HERE JESUS HEARS THE VOICE AGAIN. THE VOICE
CONTINUES TO CALL HIM
BELOVED SON, AGAPETOS
7THE VOICE APPROVES WHAT JESUS IS GOING TO DO,
NAMELY
GIVE HIMSELF AS AN EXAMPLE OF OBEDIENCE TO GOD
AND HIS WILL
8THOUGH THE PASSION DOES NOT BEGIN UNTIL THE
ARREST OF JESUS IN THE GARDEN, THERE ARE TWO
SIGNIFICANT INCIDENTS BEFORE THIS IN MARK WHICH
PREPARE US FOR A PROPER READING OF THE PASSION
9THESE ARE
PETERS CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF JESUS
10 PETERS CONFESSION
11MARK 8,27-30
JOHN THE BAPTIST, ELIJAH, ONE OF THE PROPHETS
I SEE PEOPLE BUT THEY LOOK LIKE TREES WALKING
HE LOOKED INTENTLY AND WAS RESTORED AND SAW
EVERYTHING CLEARLY
YOU ARE THE CHRIST
12 THE PRAYER OF JESUS
13The prayer of Jesus in Gethsemane underlines the
Divine Necessity of his passion and His Own
Willingness to go through it.
14While the first part of the prayer is for
deliverance, the second part, the conclusion
is that Gods will be done.
15It is important to understand that unlike at his
Baptism and Transfiguration when he heard
the heavenly voice, he hears nothing but
Silence now.
16However, as will be made evident in the manner
in which Jesus approaches his captors and the
cross, Jesus is fortified after prayer.
17If YOU were in the place of the three
disciples, what would be Your reaction to
Jesus instructions to you?
18When you pray do YOU make Gods will coincide
with your own or your will coincide with
Gods?
19THE ARREST OF JESUS
20WHAT DOES THE MARCAN JESUS SAY TO JUDAS WHO
KISSES HIM?
NOTHING
21WHAT DOES THE MARCAN JESUS SAY TO THE ONE WHO
CUTS OFF THE EAR OF THE HIGH PRIESTS SLAVE?
NOTHING
22WHAT ARE THE FINAL WORDS OF THE MARCAN JESUS
TO HIS CAPTORS IN THE GARDEN?
LET THE SCRIPTURES BE FULFILLED
23THIS IS AN INDICATION THAT HIS ARREST IS PART
OF A DIVINE PLAN AND JESUS IS WILLING TO
PARTICIPATE WHOLE-HEARTEDLY IN IT
24That Jesus will be left alone becomes evident
in the comment of Mark in 14,50 All of them
deserted him and fled.
25THE LAST TWO VERSES OF THIS SCENE 14, 51-52,
BRING OUT IRONICALLY THE FACT THAT EARLIER THE
DISCIPLES HAD LEFT EVERYTHING TO FOLLOW HIM
(10,28). NOW THEY LEAVE EVERYTHING TO RUN AWAY
FROM HIM.
26How do you respond when you do not receive an
answer to your prayer?
27Do you continue to believe that GOD will see
you through the most difficult times or do you
give up?
28 Does this statement apply to you? When the
going gets tough, the tough get going.
29Or do you identify with the following statement
When the going gets tough, I give up?
30JESUS BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN
31The refusal of Jesus to answer is stressed by
Mark to indicate also that once Jesus had prayed
and been strengthened in his prayer, he was
willing to face any and all consequences if God
wanted it to be so
32For those who believed no answer was necessary,
whereas for those who did not, no answer would
be sufficient
33When asked by the High Priest if he is the
Christ the Son of the Blessed (God), Jesus
answers I AM.
34This answer contrasts with the command to
silence given in the earlier part of the Gospel
to demons and some of those who were healed.
35The reason for the affirmation now is that it
is clear that Jesus will be the Christ, but the
Christ who suffers and dies, the Christ who
will be powerless on the Cross.
36However, Jesus is also aware that the Cross
will not be the end and already in his
affirmation of powerlessness, he also speaks of
triumph, which will come through powerlessness.
37HE WILL INDEED FIND HIS OASIS EVEN IN THIS DESERT
38Would you have preferred that Jesus give the
members of the Sanhedrin the answers they
wanted to hear and thus save himself?
39Do you resort to this tactic sometimes rather
than stand for the truth?
40How often do you take the easy way out rather
than the right way out?
41PETER DENIES JESUS
42YOU ALSO WERE WITH THE NAZARENE JESUS
I NEITHER KNOW NOR UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN
THIS MAN IS ONE OF THEM
AGAIN HE DENIED IT
CERTAINLY YOU ARE ONE OF THEM FOR YOU ARE A
GALILEAN
HE BEGAN TO INVOKE A CURSE ON HIMSELF AND SWEAR,
I DO NOT KNOW THIS MAN OF WHOM YOU SPEAK.
43HOW DO I USUALLY RESPOND WHEN FACED WITH AN
OVERWHELMING SITUATION?
44DO I DEPEND ON MY OWN STRENGTH AND OFTEN FAIL?
45JESUS BEFORE PILATE
46THE TRIAL IS A POLITICAL TRIAL, AND THE QUESTION
IS ARE YOU THE KING OF THE JEWS?
47THE TRAIL ENDS WITH TWO SIGNIFICANT INCIDENTS
CLOTHING JESUS IN A PURPLE ROBE, PLAITING A CROWN
OF THORNS ON HIS HEAD, AND MOCKING HIM AS KING
OF THE JEWS
THE RELEASE OF BARABBAS
48THE RELEASE OF BARABBAS
SON OF A FATHER EVERY PERSON
BARABBAS
49THE MOCKING OF JESUS
THE IRONY IS THAT THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF
KING HE HAS COME TO BE
50GOLGOTHA

JESUS REFUSES TO DRINK. HE WANTS TO BE FULLY
CONSCIOUS DURING THE WHOLE OF THE CRUCIFIXION.
HE WILL NOT FALL ASLEEP AT THE CRUCIAL HOUR.
52DO YOU SOMETIMES RUN AWAY FROM REALITY BY USING
DEFENCE MECHANISMS?
53WILL YOU LIKE JESUS RESOLVE TO FACE REALITY
SQUARELY?
54THE SOLDIERS DIVIDE HIS GARMENTS
THEY CRUCIFIED HIM (15,24)
THE CHARGE ON THE CROSS SPECIFIES THE CRIME
THEY CRUCIFIED HIM (15,25)
BETWEEN TWO ROBBERS
THEY CRUCIFIED HIM (15,27)
55YOU WHO WOULD DESTROY THE TEMPLE SAVE YOURSELF

56EVERYONE IS AGAINST JESUS
57LOOK
AT THE CRUCIFIED CHRIST
58BETWEEN THE THIRD AND SIXTH HOUR THERE IS
DARKNESS WHICH IS A SIGN OF DIVINE JUDGEMENT
59AT THE NINTH HOUR, THE HOUR OF DEATH, JESUS PRAYS
IN THE WORDS OF PSALM 22,1
IS GOD INDIFFERENT TO THE PLIGHT OF JESUS? HAS
GOD ABANDONED HIS SON?
60THERE IS NO MIRACULOUS RESCUE
ELIJAH WILL NOT COME TO SAVE JESUS
61THE CURTAIN OF THE TEMPLE WAS TORN IN TWO FROM
TOP TO BOTTOM
GOD IS NO LONGER PRESENT IN THE TEMPLE
OPEN ACCESS TO GODS PRESENCE
TRUE WORSHIP IS NOW ON THE CROSS

65ARE YOU ABLE TO FIND GOD IN ALL THINGS, ALL
PERSONS AND ALL EVENTS?
66THE ABANDONMENT CONTINUES EVEN AFTER DEATH. NONE
OF THE DISCIPLES COME TO CLAIM THE BODY. INSTEAD,
AN OUTSIDER DOES SO.
67THIS IS INDEED THE SON OF GOD.
