Title: Toulmin Model Review

1
Toulmin Model Review
  • Ms. Villa
  • American Literature Composition

2
Intro
  • What should an introduction include?
  • Background information on the Topic (novel)
  • Author, Title, quick synopsis, introduction of
    key characters/figures
  • Introduce the concept of a true victim

3
Claim
  • Who is the True Victim of Ch. 7?
  • Must be clear and concise
  • For example I believe Daisy is the true victim
of Ch. 7 because she is subjected to the most
mistreatment and manipulation thus, she cannot
    free herself from her circumstances.

4
Clarification
  • Explains abstract terms/words
  • What words will you have to define for your
    reader here?
  • True
  • Victim
  • For example I define true as sincere and as
    evidenced by actual facts.
  • I define victim as being subjected to emotional
    pain, abuse, and mistreatment.

5
Premise
  • Reason that SUPPORTS your claim.
  • 1 main premise for this key assignment
  • For example I believe Daisy is the true victim
of ch. 7 because she is unable to release herself
from her husbands manipulation and abuse so she
looks to her old flame Gatsby for retribution.

6
Set Up
  • How do we set up a quote?
  • What information do we need?
  • Information regarding who the quote involves.
  • Gatsby is undeniably in love with Daisy and wants
to recreate the past. This is shown when Gatsby
states Cant repeat the pastwhy of course you
    can! (110).

7
Evidence
  • What makes strong evidence?
  • Strong evidence supports your claim.
  • What makes an evidence weak?
  • Weak evidence does not support your claim.
  • For example strong evidence to show that Daisy is
the true victim But with every word, she was
drawing further and further into herself, so he
that up, and only the dead dream fought on as the
afternoon slipped away, trying to touch what was
    no longer tangible, struggling unhappilyPlease
Tom! I cant stand this anymore
  • This quote shows how Tom manipulates Daisy to
believe that Gatsby is a bootlegger. She has a
change of heart and wants to go with her husband
    Tom instead of Gatsby.

8
Warrant
  • ANALYZE THE DICTION AND LANGUAGE of your quote.
  • Explain key words. Dont tell, but SHOW your
reader how youre breaking down the language to
    prove a point.
  • Her frightened eyes told that whatever
intentions, whatever courage she had had, were
    definitely gone
  • What words could we break down and analyze? What
are the implications of this piece of evidence?
    Explain THOROUGHLY!!!!!
