We have 7 methods of CPD support that we offer to
Scottish practitioners This is one example CPD
support for community pharmacists to deliver the
new Chronic Medication Service where they have to
learn how to risk assess and care plan
appropriate patients

What we did..

Achievements

• Entered discussions with Pharmacy Department at
  Keele University. They use virtual patient
  technology in teaching undergraduates. We now
  have a family of virtual patients- Grandpa,
  Grandad, Mum, Dad and child
• A COPD e case is now available (Grandpa)
• Practitioners can ask the virtual patient
  questions while completing the CMS paperwork on
  line
• The virtual patient will then answer the question
• Learners will be able to compare their care plan
  to a sample care plan
• The learner will receive verbal feedback from the
  virtual patient on their consultation skills

Challenges

• Working with virtual patients
• Working with virtual IT designers
• The time and complexity of writing these e cases
  cannot be underestimated
• The resource becomes more useful, the more
  practitioners use the tool as the question bank
  becomes populated- resource is never finished.

Lessons learned

• Using virtual patient technology for CPD purposes
  takes time
• Pilot will help populate with questions
• The more it is used the better it will get

Next steps/Future opportunities

• E cases on
• hypertension
• hyperlipidaemia
• diabetes
• pain management are currently being developed
• Include high risk medicine and new medicine
  forms which have recently been introduced
