18Character Analysis Thesis Statement
How does Hurst utilize characterization in order
to develop a specific theme in his short story
The Scarlet Ibis? USE THE THESIS
FORMULA James Hurst utilizes characterization in
his short story The Scarlet Ibis to suggest
(insert theme) through Brothers TRAIT 1, TRAIT
2, and TRAIT 3.
19P1 Thesis Statement
- James Hurst utilizes characterization in his
short story The Scarlet Ibis to suggest people
should live life with no regrets through
Brothers embarrassment, demanding nature, and
regret.
20P2 Topic Sentence 1
- Brother is embarrassed. Brother wants a sibling
that he can play with, but his mom tells him that
Doodle wont be able to do those things and may
not even be, all there. Brother thinks, It was
bad enough having an invalid brother but the
thought of having one who was not all there was
unbearable (595). Brother is obviously ashamed
of having a physically handicapped brother
because he states it is unbearable. Later, when
Doodle is five years old, Brother reveals, I was
embarrassed at having a brother of that age who
couldnt walk (597). Brother is more concerned
about what others at school will think about him
being the brother to an abnormal child rather
than taking care of Doodle. His embarrassment
leads him to only look out for himself.
21P3 Topic Sentence 2
- Brother is demanding. As Brother takes Doodle to
Old Woman Swamp, his plan is to teach Doodle to
walk. Brothers demanding nature is revealed
when he, put(s) him(Doodle) on his feet at least
a hundred times each afternoon (597). While this
may be an exaggeration, it does suggest that
Brother demands that the routine be attempted
repetitively over a long period of time. At one
point Doodle cries out, Dont hurt me, Brother,
to which Brother replies, Shut-up. Im not going
to hurt you. Im going to teach you to walk
(598). Obviously Brother is more concerned about
strictly following the plan more than he is
Doodles well-being.
22P4 Topic Sentence 3
- Brother is regretful. Looking back on his
childhood, Brother realizes, There is within me
( and with sadness I have watched it in others) a
knot of cruelty borne by the stream of loveand
at times I was mean to Doodle (597). Although
Brother does not recognize it as a child, he now
looks back ashamedly at how poorly he treated
Doodle. When the boys parents begin to praise
Brother for teaching Doodle to walk Brother
recognizes that his family, did not know that I
did it for myself (599). This quote shows
Brother regrets his selfishness, realizing that
while he has helped his brother greatly, he has
done it out of impure motives.
23P2 Brother is selfish 1st pd
- Brother is selfish. Just after the family sees
Doodle walk for the first time Brother recognizes
that, They did not know that I did it for
myself that pride, whose slave I was, spoke
louder than all their voices, and that Doodle
walked only because I was ashamed of having a
crippled brother (599). This quote shows that
Brother only teaches Doodle to walk so he no
loger has to be ashamed.
24P3 Brother is cruel -1st pd
- Brother is cruel. After visiting Old Woman
Swamp Brother, took him up to the barn loft and
showed him his casket, telling him how we all had
believed he would die (597). While this reveals
his cruelty he goes on to demand, And before I
help you down from the loft, youre going to have
to touch it (597). These quotes reveal or this
clearly indicates -
25P4 Brother is regretful- 1st pd
- Brother is regretful. Intro quote
- The knowledge that Doodles and my plans had
come to naught was bitter, and that streak of
cruelty within me awakened. I ran as fast as I
could, leaving him far behind, (604). Analyze
quote - Synonyms of Regretful apologetic, remorseful,
ashamed, sorry
26P2 Brother is selfish 4th pd
- Brother is selfish. Brother tells Doodle that he
is going to teach him to walk, explaining he will
do so, So I wont have to haul you around all
the time (598). This quote shows that Brother is
more concerned with guarding his own time rather
than taking care of Doodle.
27P3 Brother is disappointed 4th pd
- Brother is disappointed. Brother wants a
sibling that he can run and play with, however ,
Mama, crying, told me that even if William
Armstrong lived, he would never do these things
with me (595). This quote reveals that since
Doodle is born handicapped he fails to meet
Brothers expectations.
28P4 Brother is regretful 4th pd
- Brother is regretful. After Brother takes Doodle
to Old Woman Swamp, years later he comes to
realize, There is within me (and with sadness I
have watched it in others)a knot of cruelty borne
by the stream of love, much as our blood
sometimes bears the seed of our destruction, and
at times I was mean to Doodle (597). This quote
indicates that brother is remorseful because he
didnt realize how horrible he was to doodle, and
wishes he could have the time back to change it.
