  • Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all
    times.
  • Follow all written and verbal instructions
    carefully. If you do not understand anything, ask
    for clarification.
  • Never work in the lab without the instructor
    present.
  • Do not touch any equipment without permission.
  • DO NOT EAT OR DRINK in the lab.
  • WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES when in the lab. Especially
    when working with heat, acids, bases, or glass.
    NO EXCEPTIONS

  • Perform only authorized experiments. Follow all
    instructions carefully.
  • Take lab work seriously. NO HORSEPLAY, PRACTCAL
    JOKES, RUNNING, or PRANKS.
  • Keep work area free of unnecessary materials.
    Keep isles clear.
  • Know the location and proper use of all safety
    equipment, alarms, and exits.
  • When using chemicals work in a well-ventilated
    area or under the hood.
  • Be alert and cautions at all times. Notify the
    instructor of any unsafe conditions.
  • Dispose of all chemicals and materials properly.
    Follow the instructions for proper disposal.
    NEVER RETURN UNUSED CHEMICALS TO THEIR ORIGINAL
    CONTAINER.

  • Read al labels and equipment instructions.
  • Keep hands away from body, face, eyes, nose, etc.
    while working with. Clean hands with soap and
    water after procedure. Clean and wipe work area
    and supplies after completion of lab work.
  • Return clean and dry materials to proper storage
    area.
  • Do NOT go into the storeroom.
  • If there is an emergency or drill, close all
    containers, extinguish all flames, close all
    valves, and shut off all electrical appliances.
  • When using knives or sharp instruments, always
    carry with tips and points pointing down and
    away. Always cut away from your body or partners.
    Never try to catch falling sharp objects. Grasp
    by handles.
  • TIE BACK LONG HAIR and secure loose clothing and
    dangling jewelry. Shoes must completely cover
    feet. NO FLIP-PLOPS or SANDALS WILL BE WORN IN
    LAB!

  • Report all accidents, breakages, and
    malfunctioning equipment. Report all chemical
    spills immediately.
  • If any chemical gets in your eyes, flush them for
    at least 20 minutes w/ fresh water. Notify
    instructor immediately.
  • Treat all chemicals as dangerous. Do not handle
    unless you know the proper procedures. Always
    pour acid into water. Never pour water into acid.
  • Never handle flammable materials near a flame.
    Always handle over a pan designed to catch
    spills.
  • Never remove chemicals and supplies from the lab.
  • When heating a test tube hold it so that it
    points away from you and all other people. Never
    look directly into a container that is being
    heated.
  • Handle glassware in a safe manner. Hold long

  • Inserting and removing glass tubing from rubber
    stoppers can be dangerous. Always lubricate
    glassware before inserting. Always protect your
    hands with towels or gloves. If any difficultly
    is encountered take the equipment to the
    instructor.
  • Always grab the plug and not the cord when
    removing an electrical plug from an outlet. Make
    sure your hands are dry before touching a plug,
    switch, or outlet.
  • Examine all equipment for damage, chips, cracks,
    or breakage. Report all damaged equipment
    immediately.
  • If you do not understand the use of a piece of
    equipment, ask the instructor for help.
  • DO NOT PUT HOT GLASSWARE IN COLD WATER.

  • Use caution around open flame. Do not leave any
    open flame or substance being heated unattended.
    Turn off all flames or hot plates when not in
    use.
  • Only light burners or turn on hot plates when
    instructed to do so.
  • Remember that all heated metals and glass and
    other substances can remain hot for a long time
    after being removed from the heat. They must be
    set aside to cool.
  • Use tongs or heat-protective gloves to handle hot
    materials.
  • Inform instructor of allergies, asthma, or other
    conditions that may make lab work hazardous.
