What is an Eclipse?

• Eclipse When an object temporarily blocks
  sunlight from reaching another object.

1. Umbra- Darkest part of a shadow.
2. Penumbra- lighter portion of a shadow.

Lunar Eclipse- Earth comes between the Sun and
the moon. Can occurs only during a full moon.

Total Lunar Eclipse

• Lunar eclipses occur because of the moons tilted
  orbit and only occur a couple times in a year

• TIDES

What is a tide?

• Rise and fall of the sea level along the
  coastline.
• Sea level rise High tide Drop in
  sea level Low tide

• Caused by gravitational pull of Sun and Moon on
  the Earth.
• Daily there are 2 high tides and 2 lows. (6 hours
  for each)

Affect of Gravity on tides-

• As the moon orbits Earth,
• the water closest to the moon
• gets pulled
• Bulges high tides
• Non-bulges low tides

Spring Tides- high tides are higher and low tides
are lower.

• During New moon and Full moon phases.
• Sun, Earth, and Moon are in a straight line.
• Strongest gravitational pull.

Neap Tides-little difference between high and low
tide sea levels.

• During 1st and 3rd quarter.
• Moon, Earth, and Sun are in a Ninety (90 degree
  angle)
• Not as strong
