Title: Eclipses and Tides
1Eclipses and Tides
2 3What is an Eclipse?
- Eclipse When an object temporarily blocks
sunlight from reaching another object.
4Shadows of Eclipses-
- Umbra- Darkest part of a shadow.
- Penumbra- lighter portion of a shadow.

5Solar Eclipse- Moon comes between Sun and Earth
and casts a shadow on Earth. Can occur only
during a new moon

8 Lunar Eclipse- Earth comes between the Sun and
the moon. Can occurs only during a full moon.
9 Total Lunar Eclipse
- Lunar eclipses occur because of the moons tilted
orbit and only occur a couple times in a year

11 12What is a tide?
Bay of Fundy clip
- Rise and fall of the sea level along the
coastline. - Sea level rise High tide Drop in
sea level Low tide
13- Caused by gravitational pull of Sun and Moon on
the Earth. - Daily there are 2 high tides and 2 lows. (6 hours
for each)
14Affect of Gravity on tides-
- As the moon orbits Earth,
- the water closest to the moon
- gets pulled
- Bulges high tides
- Non-bulges low tides
15Spring Tides- high tides are higher and low tides
are lower.
- During New moon and Full moon phases.
- Sun, Earth, and Moon are in a straight line.
- Strongest gravitational pull.
16Neap Tides-little difference between high and low
tide sea levels.
- During 1st and 3rd quarter.
- Moon, Earth, and Sun are in a Ninety (90 degree
angle) - Not as strong
