In brief, soil samples were extracted with 11
n-hexaneacetone (vv) for 48 h in Soxhlet
extractors. And then the extracts were cleaned on
multi-layer silica/alumina columns (1-cm internal
diameter, i.d.). The column was eluted with 10 mL
n-hexane and 70 mL 11 (vv) n-hexane
dichloromethane. The second elution was
concentrated to 200 µL under a gentle nitrogen
stream and spiked with the internal standard
13C-PCB-208 before instrumental analysis. DP
analysis was performed using an Agilent 7890A gas
chromatograph coupled to an Agilent 5975C mass
spectrograph (GC/MS) in negative chemical
ionization mode. A 15-m DB-5-HT MS column was
used, and the GC oven temperature program was set
as follows 110C (5 min), then 20C/min to 200C
(4.5 min), and finally 7.5C/min to 300 C (16
min). The monitored and quantitative ions were
m/z 653.7 and 651.7.

DP levels at the e-waste recycling site of QY
were similar to those in suspended particles
(average 3,930 ng/g) and surficial sediments from
a reservoir near the e-waste recycling plants in
QY. All these values were higher than that of the
Niagara River (5.9920 ng/g), which passes by a
DP manufacturing plant.

PUF plugs and QFFs were Soxhlet extracted with
acetonehexane mixture (11)and then cleaned and
fractionated on acid/basic multilayer silica gel
columns. The final extracts were concentrated to
200µL and then analyzed by an Agilent 7890 series
gas chromatograph coupled to an Agilent 5975C
mass spectrometer (GC/MS). A 15m DB-5-HT MS
column (250 um i.d 0.25 um film thickness JW
Scientific, Folsom, CA) was used for the DP
analysis.
