Consulate. A visa entitles the holder to travel
to the United States and apply for admission it
does not guarantee entry. An immigration
inspector at the port of entry determines the
visa holder's eligibility for admission into the
    United States.

13
Who needs a visa?
  • Anyone who is not eligible to enter the United
States visa free under the Visa Waiver Program
(VWP), or is not exempt from the visa

15
Immigrant Visas
  • An immigrant visa is required of anyone who
wishes to enter the United States to reside there
permanently, whether or not that person plans to
seek employment in the United States. U.S.
immigration law provides for the issuance of
immigrant visas in four general categories
    immediate relatives, family based, employment
based and Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, known
    as the "green card" lottery.

16
Nonimmigrant Visas
  • The following provides information on visa
requirements for travelers to the United States
who wish to visit, work or study for a temporary
period. The type of visa required will depend on
the purpose of your travel. Many travelers
seeking to enter the U.S. for business or tourism
for less than 90 days will be eligible to travel
to the United States visa free under the Visa

  • Mr. Blake bought an Air China ticket in
Beijing Office on FlightCA937 to London for next
Thursday. This morning he received an E-mail from
his parents who asked him to come back two days
earlier. That means he should start his journey
the day after tomorrow, next Monday. Air China
has no flights on Monday. Mr. Blake wants to take
Lufthansa flight to London, but he is asked to
get an endorsement from Air China.

Part Four Communication Activities
34
How will you deal with the following
passengers? Discuss in pairs and tell your
partner what you are going to do for these
passengers
  • Mr. Smith holds an air ticket to Singapore but
has no reservation. He insists on going.
Unfortunately, however, the flight has been fully
occupied. Advise him to go on standby or take the
    next flight.
  • Mr. Taylor plans a trip to Thailand. As this is a
short visit, he takes it for granted that he need
not get a visa. On the contrary a visa is
required for an Australian visiting Thailand.
Advise him to request a visa from the embassy and
    change his reservation.
  • Mrs. Cruse holds a Japan Airlines ticket to Los
Angeles. As there is no Japan Airlines flight to
Los Angeles today hed like to change to
    Northwest Airlines. Although Northwest Airlines
honors Japan Airlines tickets, it still needs a
written authorization from Japan Airlines. Try to
explain this to your passenger and advise him to
take his ticket to the Japan Airlines Office for
    an endorsement.
