AERIAL SITE PLAN View from the Northwest
looking Southeast. This Vocational Training
Center Campus is located in a large industrial
district. The site is within a brownfield zone,
designated in part for its economic blight. The
local building stock largely consists of
utilitarian vocational, artisan, and industrial
business functions. In our design, we continue
the culture of the local built environment with
the tradition of the Masonry Vernacular style in
contemporary application. We used face brick
units (4 x 8 x 16) on the exterior walls as a
primary element in combination with secondary
stuccoed masonry. These masonry surfaces are
low-maintenance, attractive, and provide maximum
thermal efficiency. A sand-coral color brick
was selected tie the material palette to Florida
Vernacular.

CAMPUS COMPUTER MODEL DAYLIGHT / SOLAR
/ SUNSHADING STUDY View from the West looking
East. To accommodate the daytime and nighttime
activities successfully into one cohesive campus
design, the two dormitories were positioned as a
hub in the middle of the site. The
administrative, academic, and vocational
buildings are primarily for daytime use, while
the recreation center is primarily for nighttime
and weekend use. The cafeteria is used
throughout the day. This arrangement keeps
student activity from sprawling across the entire
16 acres at any one time, and also helps foster a
sense of comfort in proximity and scale in the
residential courtyard and its nearby night-use
recreation center.

DORMITORY View from the Southeast looking to
the Northeast. Common Entry Lobby This two
story lobby hub is the central arrival point for
the two story dormitories. There are two wings on
each floor. Each wing has its own private lounge
area. Each floor shares laundry facilities and a
study room. The dorm rooms are suites of four
students per room with a private
bathroom. Sustainable materials were used
throughout, including low-voc paints, adhesives,
and carpeting. And renewable materials such as
linoleum flooring were used in the dorm
suites. All the buildings on campus have
automatic lighting controls to save
energy. Water is conserved by the use of
dual-flush toilet valves and waterless
urinals. Energy savings was also realized in the
use of on-demand fuel-fired tankless water
heaters.

SOFT VOCATIONAL View looking Northeast towards
the main entry into the academic and light
vocations facilities. This is the main center of
daytime activity for the students. There are 12
academic education classrooms in this building as
well as 3 nursing classrooms. The long east-west
double-loaded corridors are periodically broken
up by light wells that pop above the roofs to let
daylight in at the vestibules of the doors into
the classrooms. These light wells carry through
to the Student Services building to the West and
create a rhythm of architectural motif. At
night the light wells become glowing lanterns if
viewed from the north.

NORTH ELEVATIONS This elevation sheet shows all
of the buildings as viewed from the north. It
illustrates the high degree of glazing for
daylighting that is afforded by the solar
orientation, roof configuration, and the overhang
of sunshade elements.

WEST ELEVATIONS This elevation shows all of
the buildings as viewed from the West. It
illustrates the motif of the north-facing roofs
that carries through all of the buildings. The
degree of glazing is reduced to reject heat gain.
All the glazing that faces due East or West is
low-e for improved solar reflectance.

HARD VOCATIONAL PLAN This is also the heart of
program and mission of the center. Each trade or
construction module has a double-height space for
flexibility of use and for maximum north
light. Each bay is naturally ventilated
utilizing fans that draw air from east to west,
from the garage doors to a louver in the
southwest corner of each loft.
