The 11 Commandments

1. Calls dictate how the game will be played
2. Focus on key periods during the game
3. Focus on position and angle

Calls Dictate How The Game Will Be Played

• Take charge of the game early
• Establish control and authority
• Do not allow the game to get out of hand early on
• Difficult to bring the game back once you have
  let it go
• Avoid advantage until game control is established

Focus On Key PeriodsDuring The Game

• First 10-15 minutes of each half
• Establish game control and flow
• Last 10-15 minutes of each half
• Fatigue becomes a factor
• Leads to mistakes and frustration

Focus On Position And Angle

• Stay close to the play without interfering with
  play or the players
• Keep your AR in view at all times
• Read the likely course of play

Prevent Violence ByPreventing Player Frustration

• Call the simple fouls in the midfield
• Tactical Fouls
• Holding, Tripping, Pushing
• Reduce players tendency to lash out against the
  opponent
• Once game control is achieved, you can allow the
  game to flow more freely

Stamp Out BrutalActs Of Violence

• Tackles from behind
• Over-the-ball tackles
• Elbows
• Off-the-ball challenges
• Any act that has no place in the game

6. Dissent Cannot Be Tolerated

• Abuse of the Assistant Referees
• Visible gestures
• Confrontations in the face of the referee
• Packs of players chasing the referee
• Any act that intimidates or challenges the
  authority of the referee crew

Get 10 Yards On Free Kicks

• Failure to do so undermines the credibility of
  the referee
• Promote attacking soccer

Use Teamwork withARs And 4th Official

• Get the critical decisions correct
• Establish eye contact at every dead ball
• Exchange information through verbal and nonverbal
  communication

Read The Body Language Of Players

• Deal with trash talking
• Prevent off-the-ball holding and pushing
• Diffuse aggressive attitudes that do not belong
  in the game
• Players body language and attitude will let you
  know their frustration level
• Players reactions will let you know the course
  of action that the game needs to keep control

10. Protect Skillful Play

• ALL players must be protected
• All players have the ability to produce skillful
  play
• Referees must insure that the playershave the
  opportunity to exhibit their athletic abilities
• If referees provide a safe environment for the
  talent to be showcased, then the game will flow

Do Not Rely On Cards As The Only Means Of
Control

• Use your personality
• Early cautions have advantages and disadvantages
• Establish authority early
• Player has a long time to go sitting on a caution
