SPOC's Mission and Mentorship Program
  • SPOC mission is to improve the interaction
    between the SP student community and the
    Cambridge community (area residents and local
    businesses)
  • During 2002-03, several activities were organized
    (Open House, Pacific Street Park Party, etc.) for
    these communities to interact and exchange ideas
    on various issues of general concern
  • Support of MIT and the Cambridge City Council has
    been and will continue to be instrumental for the
    success of this initiative
  • In 2003-04 period, SPOC will launch the
    Mentorship Program (MP)
  • MP is SPOCs flagship initiative and will serve
    as an overarching activity to implement SPOC's
    stated mission
  • First Phase of the MP will cover the period
    Sept.- Dec. 2003

Features of the First Phase
of the MP
  • MP will involve SP volunteers as mentors and
    school children from the Cambridgeport area as
    mentees
  • Mentors will work in pairs, with each pair being
    assigned 2-3 mentees
  • Mentors will help mentees with their studies,
    focusing more on general concepts and their
    applications
  • The MPs academic support activities will be
    supplemented with cultural, social and civic
    awareness, environmental, and athletic activities

  • Cultural
  • Visits to museums (i.e. MIT Museum, Museum of
    Science, MFA, Aquarium, etc.)
  • Visits to historical landmarks (Freedom Trail,
    USS Constitution, Lexington and Concord, etc.)
  • Social and Civic Awareness
  • Visits to senior-citizen home, children
    foster-home
  • Visit to Cambridge Fire Station and fire-safety
    workshop with Cambridge Fire Dept.
  • Street-Wise program with MIT Police
  • How our City Government Works workshop with
    City Council representatives
  • Pen-Pal program with children from other
    countries, for example in Latin America

the MPEnvironmental and Athletic Activities
  • Environmental
  • Park cleanup activities
  • Visits to nearby local parks, one-day camping
    trips, etc.
  • Adopt-a-tree program
  • Recycling workshop
  • Athletic
  • Joint Soccer-Buddy program with the Cambridge
    Youth Soccer and SP coaches
  • Pacific Park Party II
  • Nutritional workshop
  • Attendance to Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins games
  • More activities have been planned and will be
    implemented once the First Phase has been
    successfully achieved

Time commitment and tentative schedule
  • Logistics and implementation components of First
    Phase of MP are currently being worked out
  • We plan to initiate First Phase of MP with 12
    14 mentors who will tutor 18 21 mentees
  • Potential launch date in September 2003 (in line
    with the beginning of fall courses at schools)
  • Launch date to be preceded by orientation meeting
    during which parents and mentees will visit SP
    and interact with mentors
  • MP sessions will be in SP Multipurpose Room once
    a week (possibly Wednesday evenings) for a period
    of two hours
  • Refreshments will be served during the sessions
