Troy 334 BC
  • After having solidified his rule in Macedonia and
Greece, in the early spring of 334 BC Alexander
at last set out from Pella.
  • When he crossed the Hellespont with his army in
334 BC, Alexander threw his spear from his ship
to the coast and it stuck in the ground. He
stepped onto the shore. Pulled his weapon from
the soil, and declared that the whole of Asia
would be won by the spear.

Alexander then sent his army on ahead and stayed
back alone to make a pilgrimage to Troy
  • He visited the site where Achilles was buried.
  • WHY?
  • Achilles was his ancestor on his mothers side
  • The Illiad by Homer, which told the Greek version
of the Trojan war, was his favourite book
  • He wanted to link himself to being a hero like
    Achilles a great warrior
  • He wanted to link back to the great success of
the Greeks at the Trojan war to show how his
expedition in a foreign land would also be
    similar.
  • This also emphasised the idea that this war he
was embarking on was one of Greeks against
barbarians (the way the Greeks viewed the Trojan
    war also)

7
  • Write down What were Alexanders actions at
    Troy? p.77 Paul Artus
  • And what does this event illustrate
