Title: More effective writing.

1
More effective writing.
  • (How to express yourself in the written form in a
    creative, and extraordinarily, thought provoking,
    sagacious, and beguiling manner.)

2
Write this down!
  • Goal of the day to give each student direction,
and specific ways, as to how they can make their
    writing more effective.

3
Step 1 Get into A/B partners
  • Determine who will be A and who will be B
through a way that utilizes a description.
    (Physical, colour)

4
PARTNER A WILL SHARE FIRST

effective writing. (you have 20 seconds)

5
IT IS NOW TIME FOR PARTNER B TO SHARE

effective writing, that partner A did not
already mention. (you have 15 seconds)

8
A Narrative Paragraph
  • Yesterday evening was busy. I got home at 6
oclock. My wife had prepared dinner, which we
ate immediately. After eating, I played with my
kids for about an hour. Then I started doing some
work while my wife got the little ones ready for
bed. Around 8 oclock I read my daughter her
bedtime stories. Then I finished off the evening
by doing some marking. What an exhausting night!

9
What could be improved on?
  • Partner B tell partner A what you think could
be improved on (think back to the rubric you have
    seen in class)
  • A tell B
  • REPORT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10
What was done well?
  • Partner B tell partner A what you think was
done well (think back to the writing rubric).
  • A tell B
  • REPORT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

11
Improving your writing tip 1Effective Intros
12
Why paragraph Why I hate Cell Phones!
  • A Vanilla Introductory sentence
  • Write this down!
  • I hate cell phones.
  • How could this be spiced up?
  • A/B talk

13
How to spice up that intro
  • Option 1.
  • Think of other words than hate, that express
the same idea, (distain, loath, resent) and use
    that more interesting word.
  • Write this down!
  • I loath cell phones.

14
Cell phones are sending us to a world of mind
numbing solitude.
  • Option 2.
  • Express the same idea of hating cell phones in
a strong way that appeals to the readers
    emotions.
  • These statements may shock the reader due to
    the bold stance you take.
  • Write this down
  • Ex. Cell phones are the bane of modern society.

15
Improving your writing tip 2Use interesting
words.
  • Write this down
  • These phones isolate us.
  • SPICE IT UP!
  • A/B Talk

16
  • Option 1.
  • Use interesting synonyms to avoid repeating
words. (Phones was said in the intro, and the
    first body paragraph.)
  • Ex. Devices, tools, gadgets, electronic devices
  • Write this down
  • These gadgets isolate us.

17
  • Option 2.
  • Use interesting adjectives to add emotion and
    impact.
  • Ex. Evil, supposedly helpful, soul snatching..
  • Write this down
  • These supposedly helpful, soul snatching gadgets
    isolate us.

18
Version 1
  • I hate cell phones. These phones isolate us.
When you sit on the bus texting, or talking to
someone, you dont ever interact with the people
around you. People can access you at all times,
so you are at the mercy of those who call. Cells
also are a pain to everyone forced to be around
them, because the noisy ring-tones are annoying.
Cell phones are a serious nightmare.

19
Version 2
  • Cell phones are the bane of modern society.
These supposedly helpful atrocities isolate us to
the point where people will sit next to someone
on a bus, oblivious to their existence, texting
to someone who is just as equally ignoring
another real live person. These soul snatching
gadgets are contributing to our downward spiral
toward a living nightmare by giving people
instant access to us at all times. Having
someone interrupt a live conversation by
checking, or answering, their phone is rude, and
can be likened to a kick to the groin after being
turned down for a date. The message being sent
is that you are unimportant You are so
unimportant in fact, that a call from Operator
32178234576 representing the Acme Button Company
takes precedence over you. Cells also are a
nuisance to everyone unlucky enough to be within
2 city blocks of them. The noisy, and more often
than not, irritating, ring-tones are distracting
and vexatious. Cell phones are a serious
nightmare in an otherwise dream-like world!
