Application of Regulatory SignsMN MUTCD 2B.1

• Shall be used to inform road users of selected
  traffic laws or regulations and indicate the
  applicability of legal requirements.
• Shall be installed at or near where the
  regulations apply.
• Shall be installed to provide adequate visibility
  and legibility in order to obtain compliance

6-5.01 Purpose

• Generally, the only regulatory sign applications
  that are discussed in this Section of the TEM
  are those which
• Are not specifically addressed in the MN MUTCD
  or
• Provide additional guidance to that given in the
  MN MUTCD on application, location, and usage of
  certain types of regulatory signs or
• Establish procedures relating to engineering and
  traffic investigation requirements for certain
  regulatory signs.

• 36" x 12"
• The standard size for conventional highways.
• Install it above the 30" x 30 and the 36" x 36"
  STOP signs and either independently or on traffic
  signal poles or pedestals at signalized
  intersections.
• 48 x 18
• Above 36 x 36 STOP signs on all city, township,
  or county roads and conventional highways
  intersecting expressways

DO NOT ENTER Sign

• MN MUTCD 2B.37
• If used, this sign should be placed directly in
  view of a road user at the point where a road
  user could wrongly enter a restricted roadway
• If the sign would be visible to traffic to which
  it does not apply, the sign should be turned or
  shielded from the view of that traffic.
• A second sign on the left side of the roadway may
  be used, particularly where traffic approaches
  from an intersecting roadway

WRONG WAY Sign

• May be used as a supplement to the DO NOT ENTER
  sign
• If used, should be placed at a location farther
  from the crossroad than the DO NOT ENTER sign

6-5.11 Speed Zone Signing

• Speed zone signs should be installed in the most
  advantageous locations to promote driver
  compliance
• Speed limit signs shall be placed at the terminal
  points of each speed zone
• When entering a lower speed zone, the first speed
  limit sign shall be one size larger than the
  supplemental lower speed zone signs.
• Supplemental speed limit signs for lower speed
  zones may be placed at intervals approximately
  equal to 60 seconds of travel time at the posted
  speed.

• Signs should be posted near junctions that are
  major traffic generators.
• Signs may be spaced closer in urban areas due to
  numerous access points.
• Signs may be further apart in rural areas where
  the character of the roadway remains constant
  with fewer access points.

• Primary Location
• 30 x 30
• Install on all two-lane, two-way city, township,
  or county roads
• 36 x 36
• Freeway and expressway ramps
• Conventional highways
• City, township, or county road with more than one
  through lane of approach to an intersection
• All two-lane, two-way county, city, or township
  roads and conventional highways intersecting
  expressways

6-5.12 Stop Signs

• Additional Location (left side)
• Install on any road with more than one through
  lane of approach to an intersection based on a
  traffic engineering study.
• Justification may be based on unusual roadway
  geometrics, sight restrictions, or crash
  problems.
• Sign size shall not exceed the size of the STOP
  sign on the right side of the road.
• 30 x 30 minimum
• Match right side sign size
