3What is SRI ?
A methodology rather than as a technology A
strategy not just to increase rice production,
but also to promoter human resource development.
4What is SRI ?
Fr. Henri de Laulante Since 1961 worked with
rice in Madagascar. 1983 How the best

8Principles
1. Rice is not an aquatic plant 2. Rice seedlings
lose much of their growth potential if they
are transplanted more than about 15 days
after emerge in their nursery. 3. During
transplanting, trauma to seedlings and
especially to their roots should be minimized. 4.
Wide spacing of plants will lead to greater root
growth and accompanying tillering. 5. Soil
aeration and organic matter create beneficial
conditions for plant root growth.
