• To gain gold and silver nations should maintain a
  favorable balance of trade
• A country must export more than they import
• To encourage exports governments granted
  subsidies to new industries
• Colonies were important for countries to obtain
  raw materials and as markets for finished goods

• Trading network between Europe, Africa, and the
  Americas during the 1500s-1800s
• Europeans exchanged guns, cloth, and rum for
  captured Africans
• Captured Africans were transported across the
  Atlantic (Middle Passage) and sold in the
  Americas for sugar and molasses from plantations

• Merchants would buy sugar, coffee, fur, fish, rum
  and tobacco in the Americas to take back to
  Europe
• Europe obtained raw materials from its colonies
