Of First ImportanceThe Resurrection of Jesus
  • Luke 2413-35

3
Luke 2413
  • Now that same day two of them were going to a
village called Emmaus, about seven miles from
    Jerusalem.

4
The Disciples Were Headed in the Wrong Direction,
Spiritually
  • Their expressions were glum.
  • Lk 2414-17

5
Luke 2414-17
  • They were talking with each other about
everything that had happened. As they talked and
discussed these things with each other, Jesus
himself came up and walked along with them but
they were kept from recognizing him.
  • He asked them, What are you discussing together
    as you walk along?
  • They stood still, their faces downcast.

6
The Disciples Were Headed in the Wrong Direction,
Spiritually
  • Their expressions were glum.
  • Lk 2414-17
  • Their attitude and conversation were negative.
  • Lk 2418-21

7
Luke 2418-21
  • One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, Are you
only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the
things that have happened there in these days?
  • What things? he asked.
  • About Jesus of Nazareth, they replied. He was
a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God
and all the people. The chief priests and our
rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death,
and they crucified him but we had hoped that he
was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And
what is more, it is the third day since all this
    took place.

8
Luke 2422-32
  • In addition, some of our women amazed us. They
went to the tomb early this morning but didnt
find his body. They came and told us that they
had seen a vision of angels, who said he was
alive. Then some of our companions went to the
tomb and found it just as the women had said, but
    him they did not see.

9
Luke 2422-32
  • He said to them, How foolish you are, and how
slow of heart to believe all that the prophets
have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer
these things and then enter his glory? And
beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he
explained to them what was said in all the
    Scriptures concerning himself.

10
Luke 2422-32
  • As they approached the village to which they were
going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther.
But they urged him strongly, Stay with us, for
it is nearly evening the day is almost over. So
he went in to stay with them.

11
Luke 2422-32
  • When he was at the table with them, he took
bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it
to them. Then their eyes were opened and they
recognized him, and he disappeared from their
sight. They asked each other, Were not our
hearts burning within us while he talked with us
on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?

12
Unusual Part of the Story
  • The two followers did not know they were walking
    with Jesus.
  • Why did they not instantly recognize Him?
  • This was a miracle that Jesus performed.

13
1 Corinthians 153-4
  • For what I received I passed on to you as of
first importance that Christ died for our sins
according to the Scriptures, that he was buried,
that he was raised on the third day according to
    the Scriptures,

14
Unusual Part of the Story
  • The two followers did not know they were walking
    with Jesus.
  • Why did they not instantly recognize Him?
  • This was a miracle that Jesus performed.
  • The Bible makes it evident that the resurrection
of Christ is the central theme to our faith.

15
Romans 109
  • That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is
Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised
him from the dead, you will be saved.

16
Unusual Part of the Story
  • The two followers did not know they were walking
    with Jesus.
  • Why did they not instantly recognize Him?
  • This was a miracle that Jesus performed.
  • The Bible makes it evident that the resurrection
of Christ is the central theme to our faith.
  • Jesus wanted to teach them from the scripture
    that He was alive.

17
Faith
  • Our faith in the resurrection must rest upon
something more substantial and more solid than
    our emotion.
  • It must rest upon the word of God.

18
Unusual Part of the Story
  • The two followers did not know they were walking
    with Jesus.
  • Once their eyes were opened to the fact that
Jesus was alive, there was a very positive
    transformation.

19
Luke 2433-35
  • They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem.
There they found the Eleven and those with them,
assembled together and saying, It is true! The
Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.

20
Positive Transformation
  • Their geographic location illustrated the change
    in their lives.

21
1 Corinthians 1519-22
  • If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we
are to be pitied more than all men.
  • But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead,
the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
For since death came through a man, the
resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.

22
Positive Transformation
  • Their geographic location illustrated the change
    in their lives.
  • Encountering the risen Christ changes the
    attitudes of these two men.
  • Meeting with the resurrected Christ also
    positively changed their relationships.
  • This encounter with Jesus changed their testimony.

23
Testimony
  • Opened eyes should always produce opened lips.
  • Dont just keep the faith, spread it around.

24
General Wm. Booth
  • Some mens ambition is art. Some mens ambition
is fame. Some mens ambition is gold. My
ambition is the souls of men.

25
Two Lessons of Application
  • No matter how deep your despair, there is always
    hope.
  • The hope we have today is what the Bible calls
    The souls anchor.
  • We have a living hope, an eternal hope, a hope
that does not make us ashamed.

26
John Autrey
  • Your Emmaus is any place you go trying hard not
to care that the bottom has dropped out of your
    life.

27
Two Lessons of Application
  • No matter how deep your despair, there is always
    hope.
  • No matter how disoriented your life, invite Jesus
    into your heart.

28
Revelation 320
  • Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If
anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will
